While it may not be new big studio PC game, Fortress Forever is definitely a game to check out; especially if you own Half-Life 2 (HL2) and have played/enjoyed any of the past Fortress games. Fortress Forever was first started by members of the Team Fortress Classic (TFC) community when it became clear that Valve had given up on creating a TFC:S game. Only later did Valve actually show any progress towards TF2, but by then Fortress Forever was well on its way. And since it is an independent mod, it won't cost you a dime to download and play if you already own HL2 or even just HL2:DM.
Anybody who has followed TF2 and played TFC or Quake Team Fortress can tell you that it is a slight departure from the original style (for better or worse: I'm not passing judgment since it isn't out yet). Fortress Forever, however, stays true to its predecessors while adding in new features and character abilities to make it just as fast paced and fun. The best part is that since Fortress Forever is free, you don't even have to choose; you can play FF now and then try out TF2 when it comes (sooner or later depending on if you pre-buy the orange box).
