Ralph Bakshi's animated version of Lord of the Rings from 1978

The Mysterious Cities of Gold (1982)

Not a film per se, but it is worth a mention. It helped popularize the French/Japanese animation style. It also 'mixes in' realistic depictions of nature formations (ie. clouds, video scenery) and other effects for added stylistic realism and immersion. Heavy use of real photographs, art and graphics.

Still have yet to see a very awesome story together with an amazing animation quality.

eg. Paprika(Animation and visuals were top notch, but the story sucked.)

I was actually gonna say Paprika for having both amazing visuals and an amazing story.  It's one of my favorites.  I'm a huge fan of lucid dreams so I loved all the classic film scenes tied together with dream logic.  It's one of the few films I've seen where I thought every scene and every frame were used perfectly, and not a second was wasted.  I can't love that film enough.

Spirited Away

I'm enjoying this thread. Very nostalgic.

Iron Giant like mentioned before, very good direction and story idea, emotional ending etc.

And the Asterix movies from yesteryear. Loved the Asterix movies.

Hmm, pie.
