DQ8 in my opinion is the better game. It really takes you back to the beginnings of JRPG's with it's gameplay and difficulty, and also it's story is very good and it has it's funny moments.
FFXII it's an evolution of the JRPG genre in terms of combat and exploration, and has a more mature story, while still very solid, was a bit predictable and cliched.
