Anyone else find it odd that Holocaust denial or revision will land you in jail?

I don't think even Libel is punishable by jail time in Western democracies. The only time I can think free speech of politicol views can get you arrested in the US involves inciting a riot.

Surely there is enough evidence supporting the offical facts of the holocaust that denial would be useless. Yet it is illegal to discuss. Germany will even seek extradition to get you.

'Holocaust denier' convicted in Australia

SYDNEY (AFP) — An alleged Holocaust denier wanted in Germany was found guilty of criminal contempt in Australia Thursday for defying court orders to stop publishing offensive material on the Internet.

Gerald Frederick Toben, 64, was convicted in the Federal Court on 24 counts of contempt of court after continuing to publish material about Jews and the Holocaust on his Adelaide Institute website, despite 2002 orders to stop.

Judge Bruce Lander said Toben, who will be sentenced later this month, had steadfastly refused to comply with the law.

He did not accept that freedom of speech "does not include the freedom to publish material calculated to offend, insult or humiliate or intimidate people because of their race, colour or national or ethnic origin", the judge said.

Toben told reporters he did not regret his actions, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

"If you believe in something and you want to have that freedom to express your opinions then you should be prepared for sacrifices," he said.

Toben was arrested in Britain in October last year under a European Union arrest warrant issued by Germany but a bid by German authorities to have him extradited to face charges of Holocaust denial failed.

He faces charges in Germany of publishing material on the Internet "of an anti-Semitic and/or revisionist nature" which denies, approves of, or plays down the Holocaust.

Holocaust denial is a crime in Germany and offenders can face up to five years in jail.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Who would have thought that the holocaust was such a touchy subject, no?

Yeah I don't think it should be able to put you in jail, or even get you prosecuted.

I think that holocaust deniers are for the most part anti-semetic scumbags, but being a scumbag on its own shouldn't be a crime.

Well, not all of the revisionists are deniers. The official story is 6 million Jews died in concentration camps. Claiming it was only 2 or 3 million can land you in jail.

Well considering the huge amounts of genocide's in human history I think its a bit over the top to prosecute denial just for the holocaust.

Anyone that denies it either has an agenda or is seriously brainwashed/ignorant because the Nazi's were extremely meticulous with their records but I don't think you should be put in gaol for it.

That's crazy, I honestly didn't know that the Germans were so sensitive about this subject.

Seriously.

You have no idea. They have laws against pretty much everything that will bring back memories of the Nazis.

Well when your country is responsible for a World War that killed 50 million + people and 6 million were slaughtered...yeah it's a touchy subject.

Well the allies were at least partially responsible for the war. Its the holocaust that they feel most guilty about I think.

Mind you it did happen over sixty years ago, as terrible as it was the world does need to try and move on.

A few years ago they even threw a guy in jail for teaching his dog to seig heil all the time. Then they couldn't get the dog to stop and it was hilarious.

Yeah, this shouldn't be illegal. It should be society shunning those idiots, not the government locking them up.
