Forums - Gaming - This is probably one of the worst gaming generations of all time for Sony.

Kuturagi essentially delt Sony a losing console when he designed the PS3. Its cost of manufacturing was simply rediculous. Taking this into consideration, Sony and Kaz Hirai have done a downright miraculous job of turning their fortunes around with the PS3 and it's really a testimate to the strength of the PlayStation brand that the system is still around. I can say confidently that if either Nintendo or Microsoft tried launching a console with a $850 production cost, they probably wouldn't still be in the market, let alone competative.

Sony has lost out financially and in market share this generation.

However if you're a Sony gamer things aren't looking too grim, sure you had a tough ride through 2006/2007 but 2008 was pretty mint and 2009/2010 look to be very decent as well.

Snake612 does not joke.

You may not agree with him but he is being serious =P

The two major factors that I saw right off the bat:

1. Price could rival that of a decent desktop computer.
2. Ads were awkward and creepy at times.

Same goes for Atari when Nintendo came along.... Thing is Nintendo swept them away in on gen... MS didn't hit it right the first time but they're doing an impressive job this time around.

Historically, NO company tends to stay on top forever.  A challenger will come along, with a better combination and steal the thunder.  Often a company will remain married to last generation way too long, and suffer.  Sony has done better than normal though.

In regards to Nintendo coming along, the videogame business was in a shambles, the remains of the Crash of the early 1980s.  Too much junk got produced and people got bored.  Nintendo came up with a model that worked.  Atari was just making the 2600 but that was it.

So, each time someone goes "Blah Blah Blah, ______ rocks!", all I have to do is remember the past.  Nintendo is now back on top, after having Sega deal them a tough blow, and then Sony taking the lunch.

Honestly, I feel kinda bad for Sony this gen.

I'm not, they became too arrogant and didn't realize how important 3rd party exlusives are.
