something else to consider is the guest factor. if you host people at your home, then a wii is a sound investment, as it is pretty limited for solo play. most people i know who have one say it collects dust, but my friends are all in their 30's. i would say ps3 is the superior machine in almost every category save for party play. nothing sucks so much as having my friends come over and take turns playing something online.

If online is important the choice is easy, hd tv even easier.

its better on the ps3 no matter what for some reason.. doesnt really make sense, but its true. beside if u get a ps3 ull discover many other franchises that dont start with wii or have mario in it

Ask yourself how much do you really want Rockband? I agree with those who say that DLC and superior audio goes to the PS3, and the better graphics comes secondary. But is it enough to offset the reasons to get the PS3 over the Wii. And what other games do you want, and how bad do you want them? Or course the only system you'll get Miyamato games are going to be a Wii which I think is with the purchase by itself. But if you want Rockband (which is on the Wii), you said you "prefer the games on the wii," but you're still asking about the PS3, something about the PS3 is seriously holding you back. I'm not a Rockband fan, but I would think that Rockband on the PS3 will give you a better experience. What are some of the kind of games you like, and maybe the PS3 can accommodate?

Rock Band 2 & Guitar Hero World Tour are the same on PS3 & Wii, including downloadable content.  The Wii is cheaper than the PS3.  Also, if you are interested in other Wii games such as Mario Party, you should get a Wii.  You won't have the same gameplay experience on other consoles since they don't offer motion controls.

Alright, right now we need the OP to tell us:

What specific games he knows about and wants
What genres he likes
If graphics and online are important
If Bluray is a factor
If the other features of a PS3 are a factor
If he frequently has non-gaming friends come to his home

Really, we need some more info if we're actually gonna help =/
Do you play many games? If you at least knew and wanted widely known blockbuster games such as COD4 or GTAIV I'm sure PS3/Xbox would have been a heartbeat purchase, and the question would of been which one of those two systems you want.

If the only gaming experience you have is with Rockband (I know a lot of people who don't even own consoles or play PC who were exposed to gaming through Guitar Hero), you should either:

1) Get a Wii, because it's the cheapest
2) Play some other "hardcore" games with friends
3) Play Rockband at a friend's house, because not even the Wii's low price justifies one game...

Edit: Lol, I consider myself a PS3 fanboy, but: Why not buy a Xbox Arcade? Currently it's cheaper than the Wii, and it has the better graphics you desire.

i am planning on getting rock band as well, im getting it for the ps3. although its because thats all i have. if you only want it for rock band get wii its cheaper but it really come down to what other games you want.

i would personally lean ps3, but the wii has good games as well. Either one should suit you fine.

If playing online is a bid deal for you get PS3 because Friend Codes are a bitch.
If you dont care about online but care about local and DLC get Wii. Its a hell of a lot cheaper and virtually the same.

All that blu ray and other shit you didnt ask for is not important especially since you said Wii has a lot of games you wanna play.

If  PS3 has more games you wann play then get that with Rock Band. Its really simple dude.
