Forums - General - What should Obama do about somali pirates?

If there wasn't any media and I was in charge... Then I would just bomb the whole country untill this piracy stops.

I mean a lot of pirates do it so their families don't have to live in poverty. If you kill their families then they won't need money :)

But that would be plain cruel and evil right?

We have existing policies and procedures in place to deal with pirates and the like.

Why should President Obama personally do anything?

Probably because the polcies aren't working.  I mean an American ship hasn't been attacked in hundreds of years... and now all of a sudden two were... and a senators plane fired on.

I here his plan has to do with a bi partisian effort to deal with the pirates while they are on land.

Hm, what exactly would you propose then?  A military escort for every United States vessel entering the region?

Even then, that still doesn't explain why President Obama should handle this personally.

We have a navy filled (hopefully) with plenty of qualified people who are far more familiar with the situation who likely deal with issues like these on a frequent basis (most of which probably don't get news coverage).  I don't see the President as an omniscient being who knows all and directs every element of the government (that would be a dictator).  I see the President as a decision maker who relies on consulting from all government personnel each versed in their own field and specialty.  IMO, the Presidnet is needed when a judgment call has to be made.   You don't have the head manager of the hospital diagnose and perform the brain surgery, you have the brain surgeon perform it and the manager approve it.

This doesn't happen on a frequent basis.  This is the first time an American ship has been attacked by pirates in nearly 200 years

Like the last time we had to deal with it was like 1815.

It happens to other countries fairly often.  Something like 1 out of every 200 ships going through the area get hijacked... but American ships... the pirates used to be afraid of.

The standard practice is to just buy the ships back because it's cheaper to run the risk and buy back the ship then it is to hire any kind of protection.

Something about the Obama Administration is making the pirates more adventurerous.

Some sort of statement about not negotiating and negotiating to allow armed americans to go through the canal should be enough to leave americans alone.

Followed by increased efforts to get that country back on balance.

Though I think Obama will have his hands full with Pakistan and Afganistan when it comes to fixing other countries.

I would suspect it has more to do with General Petraeus, and the idea of paying your enemies to not fight you.

Obama, for all his peace rhetoric, seems a little militant to me (I kind of like it). If I was the ruler of a country, he seems like the kind of person I would not want to piss off.

Could be.  Either way something is making American ships targetable again.

Who knows though...  Maybe the sniper exectution of the pirates is enough of a fix.

That and the American crew actually fighting back.

Why would they attack a ship bringing aids to their own country? Idiots! Now people will suffer even more.

Also, Somalia is a Muslim country, religion should condemn these pirates and fight them to stop.

Somalia is not really a country anymore ,its a territory divided among different groups, warlords with some sort of goverment in a northern country, really messed up place sadly.

Pirate attacks in Africa do especially Nigeria and Somalia waters.

Pirate attacks against US vessels... are a function of how often US vessels go into those waters more likely than what flag they're flying.

I don't know...I would want to attack a ship bringing aids to my country too :D jk

But yeah, that is pretty much what extremists do...ruin their own countries backed up by their twisted idealogies.

They do not require the aid. They are quite content with capturing the ships and demanding money for the crew, cargo, and ship.

Well, during the few months in the second half of 06 that the ICU had control of Mogadishu and Harardhere, piracy decreased. As for the rest of the population, the pirates actually provide some economic activity for them. They have no real alternatives, so they choose not to bite the hand that feeds.

We go there... a lot.  I mean we're one of the leading sources of aid to Africa.

I mean we already were and Bush tripled the amount.
