Forums - Sony - Sony officially confirm Patapon 2 rumours

Pretty bold move that will urke Gamestop amongst other companies that sell used games. Kinda disappointed that I bought a PSP-2000 only to see the future of PSP going digital. I'm hoping they release atleast a limited amount of UMD Patapon 2s or start putting games on Pro Duos instead.  I wish Sony would test the waters with the second PSP rather go balls out right now.

How big will Patapon 2 be in file size? They also have to consider some people don't have internet. Either way really bold move by Sony and they may lose a few customers that aren't willing to go this route. You still have to keep in mind you can't re-sell a digital copy. At the very worst you could get back 30% of a newly released title back in cash, but now you'll be SOL because you can't resell your copy.

It's just that simple.

Hearing news of a digital release is great! I would like a UMD version for back-up.

Patapon is 386 mb.

Everyones talking like it's fact that they are going to ditch umd, it hasn't happened yet.

Well, from the perspective including Nintendo, the DSi games are download only. iPod Touch apps are only download. So, the next PSP might only be download.

Right but the DSI games are more miniature/mini games then anything else. Nintendo is/will also be testing the water with the GBA downloads. But at the moment all the major DS games are still in cart format.

I'm glad Patapon is only 386mb. How big are games like FF Crisis Core and God of War in terms of size?

I just think at the worst they should allow the games to be in UMD format. Atleast we are still getting a PSP case of sorts :P

Also as of reference the first Patapon did 600k, so I wonder how much sales it would have to garner to be a "success" and how much it would have to sell in terms of profit as download only/voucher versus outright umd.

It's just that simple.

I would guess games like crisis core and GOW would be about 1.5 GB. I don't know this but I would think they would max out the UMD.

I've been thinking about buying my friend's PSP 3000 that he's selling at a 'friend discount'. Not so sure though with UMD possibly going away and all the current games being null on the new system. Makes me want to buy a cheap 2000 and grab the PSP games that I'm interested in and call it good.

Can they offer the UMD library for download on a UMDless 4000, or is that option pretty 'out there'?

Person 1: Does Valkyria Chronicles have trophies?
Person 2:  No.
Person 1: Forget it. I'm not buying it.
Person 2: Wait! It's amazing! Unique, charming, drop dead gorgeous... Hello?

I am almost certain the next PSP won't be UMD-less - PSP2 might, but there is no way Sony will cut off that many customers, it wouldn't be worth it.

Sony hasn't even announced a new version of the PSP, everything is pure speculation. Let's not blow this 1 event out of proportion here.

I was kinda thinking along those lines. It's oh so fun to speculate though!
