Historically, Labour have been much better than the Tories, in many respects, they still are, but Labour have gone to far right for my liking, imo, they should have stayed more Left on the economy and much more Left on social issues, if Labour go back to the left, i may well vote for them in the future, but at the moment, i wouldnt vote for them. i will never, ever, ever, ever vote for the Tories. im voting for a 3rd/4th party in the next elections.

Dude please, that depends on you perspective, for me Tories have been better for the country than Labour , especially if you look at traditional Labour not the New 1997 Labour (which kinda are commited to free market capitalism).

They couldnt stay on the left because they were unelectable at the left, just look at the 1992 election when even unpopular tory government was able to win against Kinnocks Labour or at Labour of 1980's trashed in the elections by Thatcher "Labour is not working".  Thats why they have changed

And talking about history 3 biggest economic dowturns in the UK have started under labour, Ramsay McDonald in the 1920-1930's. Wilson and Jimmy Callaghan in the 70's and Now the Labour Goverment of blair and brown.

Tories weree better suited to lead the country, thats why Labour morphed into more similar party in 1997 election.

like you said, its subjective, i still think Labour would have done a better job than Thatcher or Majour

also, Labours move to the right in the 90s is why i wont be voting for them

Oh god, government spending isn't socialism if they contract, but it is if they don't?
Again, I am talking economics, not politics. There is a way to spend money using a Capitalistic approach, and a way to spend it using a socialistic approach. The government spending money could be for socialistic reasons (like roads), but spend in a capitalistic way (best contract bid).

So are you saying that, as far as economics is concerned, the amount of taxation and government programs doesn't matter to whether it's socialist/capitalist, but whether the programs are "in-house" or contracted to private firms?

Not remotely. Why you spend money, and how you spend money are very different things. The debate on why money is spent has nothing to do with what I am talking about. I am only talking about how you spend it.

For example, I am against nationalized healthcare. I think it's too socialist. But, if it passes, and we collect 2 trillion a year to support it, the question as to if we should do it or not do it is no longer the debate. The debate now moves to how do we spent it.

Spending it in a Capitalist manner, is far better then a Socialist way, and is how I would debate we spend the money I don't think we should spend.

That clear things up?

Yeah.  What surprised me was that I took your other comment to be "economics vs. politics" and so I thought it was odd that you would say contracting was economically capitalist despite taxes to pay for the program and the fact that government was still directing the economic activity created by that program's spending (and whatever the program does).  But now I think I see -- you meant only that it was a more capitalist way to SPEND the money, not looking at the other things.  Right?

Thanks for your candid explanation.

[edit: the same thought was more or less what prompted the original comment as well.]
