Well, it's interesting you mention.
There's a "conspiracy theory" out there which says the Project Apollo was greenlighted by Kennedy to keep the scientific-military-industrial lobby from pursuing Orion (nuclear pulse spaceship, totally doable with 60's tech and able to outdo by several magnitudes current rocketry).
