I like their consoles and some of their game franchises. But I see absolutely no reason why I should "like" Microsoft themselves.

As someone that has been involved in the Microsoft world since the early 90's I have seen a lot and have no problem with Microsoft.
Most companies that have been passed by Microsoft were past because of thier own short sightedness.
IBM didnt lock down MSDOS license. So MS sold it to other vendors that wanted to create IBM compatible PCs.
During the pre Windows 95 era of Windows major software vendors Borland, Lotus, WordPerfect and Harvard Graphics didnt take Windows seriously. They thought that hey the Mac never took control so what makes you think Windows will. Because of this the following happened.
Borland didnt release a Dbase for Windows until after Windows 95 released. They lost the desktop database market to Microsoft Access.
Harvard Graphics didnt work hard to create a good Windows version of thier software and PowerPoint took over.
Lotus and WordPerfect both concentrated on the DOS market and the Windows versions of Lotus 123 and WordPefect were terrible pieces of software compared to Microsoft Excel and Word. 123 and WordPerfect were basically DOS programs in Windows shells.
The market didnt approve of this and people/companies shifted from the market leaders to Microsoft.
IBM created a superior product to Windows with OS2, but they didnt produce software for OS2. The software development tools costs thousands of dollars while Windows software development tools cost hundreds.
Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.
I have many reasons for disliking MS. And none are of the fanboy variety. I use XP, and owned a X-box and a 360. But I'll never own another MS console. Never.

I know where you are coming from alright as mine has broken twice.

The fact of the matter is, though, that MS have given us great operating systems over the years (aside from Vista), and now 2 very solid consoles to enjoy. Not to mention that Bill gates is one of the most generous people on the planet. The guy donates more money per year than Oprah makes in a year and everyone praises Oprah as some fucking angelic savior while condemning MS? People simply have no idea what the fuck is going on in the world. |
Ha ha yes!! thats EXACTLY how it is too. And the US is the most generous country in the world always sending aid to needy countries. Yes the leaders have mad some stupid choices too (unneeded wars and such) BUT what country hasn't?!?!?
I went into the Who likes Sony and Nintendo threads and for the most part all i saw was I like Sony Or i love Nintendo, there wasn't too much hate in those threads. But then i go into this thread and their are EPIC amounts of hate. lol some people *shakes head*

Not really, because they never were in the same monopolistic position as MS has been with their OS in several segments of the software market. MS has been found guilty of anti-competitive behaviour and fined several times.
And it's not just lawyer fluff: this monopolistic position exploitation had a very real, practical effect on the software world.
It's very well known to every web coder that IE's bundling with Windows is the main force that has kept back the internet content from easier developing and prototyping. Their browser stagnated for almost ten years, delivering to most people a sub-par, flawed, feature poor rendition of the HTML standard they declared they were complying to.
That's what you can expect when competition is stifled so that it does not let the quality of the products or services emerge.
It's only because MS's IE is losing ground that web developers can code to a standard again, instead that to an endless compilation of quirks. Ironically even when MS introduced good things into the web development - they were the first to implement the HTTPrequest javascript object that is the base of AJAX programming - their own browser is the worst at it in terms of features and speed.
Similar other examples could be brought forth ( buying their way into ISO fasttracking for an "open" office document standard that only they can correctly implement ) of behaviour that makes sense for their business, but is bad for consumers in general.
Thus there's no morality stigma in my disliking - I don't think morality applies - merely the reasons of an informed consumer.

HTML is a shitty. We should ditch it and use something actually useful for doing rich internet applications.

...and this is why those old enough to know better hate Microsoft! They did NOT do this, in fact they stole the market from other, better competitors with their (illegal) forced bundling agreements. Anyway, please do not spread silly rumours like this! lol.
