Forums - Sony - Sony has 'no plans for a PS3 price drop,' calls rumors 'false'

All those rumors of a PS3 price drop, like as soon as tomorrow? There's absolutely nothing to them according to Sony, who has contacted us with an official comment on the matter.

"As we have stated previously, we do not have plans for a PS3 price drop, and any rumors to that effect are false and are the result of speculation," the statement from SCEA public relations manager Al De Leon reads. "SCEA remains focused on the long-term momentum of PS3. With the industry's best software lineup this year, combined with our most aggressive marketing campaign to date, we remain confident in our approach and the value we're delivering with PS3."

Sony's reaction to increasing expectations of an imminent PS3 price drop is interesting; it's not the usual "we don't comment on rumors and speculation." By blatantly stating there won't be one, the company may be trying to manage expectations (note that it hasn't denied a possible PS2 price cut). Also, if it were to announce a price drop one day after issuing this clear denial, it would draw considerable investor ire. Then again, if a reduced price for the console isn't announced relatively soon, it risks upsetting not only shareholders, but retailers and publishers as well.

I am wondering if the announcement was actually only a PS announcement (thus pointing to the now official PS2 price drop to $99) instead of a PS3 announcement.  Everything I had seen only said "Sony has an announcement for March 31st" and only on VGChartz have I seen it specify the PS3.

EDIT:  Ah shoot I just saw a thread about this farther down.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a PS3 related announcement hence the PS2 price cut.

I think Sony is going to continue concentrating on making profit. They are a business after all.

Regardless,I think the PS3 is selling well enough to last until christmas without a price drop.

I agree with you there.  I mean, it may not be selling 360 numbers or Wii numbers, but it is only about 30-50k off each week at $100-200 higher price so it really is doing fine.

There will be price drop this year for sure, but expecting it before september is wishfull thinking.

Even if a Price drop for PS3 was coming, do people expect Sony to announce it in Advance? "Attention Potential PS3 owners, Don't buy our product yet, wait until the upcoming price cut takes effect"

Anticipating a price cut on the PS3 this early in the year was wishful thinking. I suspect a $50 price drop (Sep/Oct), at most (IMO) otherwise I don't see any others PS3 price cuts for the remainder of the year. Here's to hoping though.........

I dunno.  If they hold out all the way till September, and they get their CPU/GPU on 45nm chips, they could probably afford a $100 cut and break even or only lose a tad per console sold.

They should 'totally' cut the price of the PS3.

Perhaps they could think about it for E3?

No matter what Sony says (in interviews or to investors), some analysts simply won't accept that Sony is looking for profitability first and foremost.

Then again many analysts have proven not to even listen to what Sony says in their financial reports/conferences, so...

Does anyone actually know whether or not Sony can afford to cut the price of PS3 this year?

Is there anyone on here who works for Sony and has inside information on whether or not we will see a PS3 price cut this year?
