Given the fact that you could get classic games for the PS2 for well under 10$ i'd say that PS2 is the right choice. Its not like it will hurt your wallet buying one, so go for it. Buy tons of cheep and awesome games, and if you feel that you need more, go for the 360 later. But your first choice should be PS2 hands down.

To say otherwise is madness.

You also have to ask yourself how many of those great PS2 games are easy to find and how of those are going to be $10?

Remember, many PS2 games are out of print and that makes the great ones harder to find.  The harder to find something it, the more expensive and, well, harder to find it is.

Not overly difficult. I bought all my listed games, with the exception of Rogue Galaxy and the PS1 games, between two EB Games on one day, purely on a whim.

How do you guys know the OP likes RPG? All these RPG's mean nothing if he dosent like RPG.

He's mentioned it. Or at least alluded to it: "I prefer adventure and RPGS over shooters"

360 is still future proof, you cant really compare the ENTIRE ps2 lifespan vs the 360 little life span, and the 360 has lots of good RPG and adventure games,Fable 2 ftw!

I have all 3 current gen systems, have had them since launch, and still have, and play, my PS2 the most.

The PS2 is far from dead. "No new games after this year" doesn't mean squat until one of the current gen comes remotely close to having as good of a games catalog.

eBay + GameStop == RPG + Action game happiness for eons with a PS2. The only real reason to buy a 360 over a PS2 is for the online gaming, or if you've got a HDTV, and will be happy with a very limited selection of RPGs by comparison. Also, wireless controllers are readily available for the PS2 -- heck most of the new controllers on store shelves for the PS2 are wireless.

Honestly, my 360 controller rechargable packs... don't seem to last very long.  They spend a good 20-25% of their usage time plugged in anyhow, in my home.  I hear you can use rechargable AAs, but there's some notes on the controller that state specifically that you *shouldn't* do that, ever.  Perhaps because that would mean MS didn't get your money.  I dunno.

So if i say Supermario brothers 2 is awesome,so that means the Snes gen is still going?

Well it certainly isn't future proof, as it'll be 'obsolute' in a mere 3 years or so, as the PS2 aparently is now. If the games are new to him, they're new.

Why isn't it fair for that comparsion? It's what is available to him now. Sure we can project what the 360 may get down the line, but regardless, it's highly unlikely that'll reach the amount of quality games the PS2 has. Plus, in a few years time, which would be required to play much of the PS2's quality library, the 360 will be much cheaper as will many of its current library.

I agree with you, the 360 does have some great RPG's and adventure games. Only difference is the money you'd spend on buying 1 good RPG on the 360 could buy you 3-4 great ones on PS2.

I understand the argument that many would feel that the games would seem outdated, but as he mentioned before he doesn't care much for top of the line graphics anyhow.

No new games will stop being made in about 4-5 years,PS2 will be DEAD,No new pS2 games will be coming out by 2010 or even mid 09.

He will eventually get a HDTV and go online gaming,so 360 is perfect, and even if he dosetn care about graphcis so what it helps the game,ie better draw distance.

Its up to the OP,Does he want future proof Xbox 360 with good selection of games and new AAA games being made everyday,or PS2 system with cheap RPG and no new AAA games being made.

Sure.  It lives on through the Wii!

PS2 is still going, and going, and going.  Hate it all you want, man.  That doesn't stop it from being the truth.  Check out the numbers the PS2 has sold since the 360 launch -- they're shockingly close.  If the PS2 was truly dead, why would 25 million people buy one in the past 3+ years?

Last time I checked, there were WAY more PS2 games available at the local game store than for any other console.  Used sure.. still good, especially for the money.  I'd have to venture a "guess" that, given that said stores are willing to devote that much retail shelfspace to used PS2 titles, they must still sell pretty well, and as long as they sell well, the devoted space will remain so, and used trade will continue to flourish.

PS2 may outlive us all. ;)

I dont hate the Wii,many reasons why people bought on in the last 3 years.

PS2 also had lots of shovelware,if they sold well why did sony cut the price down to 100?

PS2 also had lots of great titles.  And we don't know if there's a pricecut yet.  Besides, pricecuts are inevitable -- you have to keep up with the competition who also does pricecuts.  Ask yourself, "If the 360 was doing so well last year, why did they cut the price?"

Is the 360 a dying platform, because they slashed the price last year?

Dude, is this a joke?
The Ps2 offers the best library of games if you put it against PSWii60, why would it fail against one of them alone?
This wouldn't be a fair question even if you included online, but the fact that you said you prefer RPG and adventure games just makes me think you might be stealth trolling.

True, but like I've said the PS2 doesn't have a future.

If someone had come around in 2002 and asked should I get a PS2 or a PS you would tell them the PS1 because it has the larger library of games and completely ignore the future of the console.

Don't get me wrong, I love the PS2 library and do think it is incredibly, but you can't deny that the PS2 era is simply over. If you buy a PS2 as your only current gaming system, you're trapped with nowhere to grow. If you buy a 360 (or PS3 or Wii) it is still a current system and he still has plenty of options.

Tell me something, do you think that by the end of this gen, specially for someone who doesn't seem to care much for online and prefers RPGs and adventure games over shooters, the 360's library of games has a great chance of being better than that of the PS2's? And for how much PS2 games go for these days? Next to nothing for classics he never had a chance to experience?

This is not even a question. I still think the OP might be stealth trolling.

Whoops, missed your post.

I have no idea what will happen by the end of this gen.  Again, lets go back to 2002, would you have been able to guess that the PS2 would have such an incredible library?

Also, by your reasoning it seems like you think everyone should buy a PS2 before anything else since it has this fantastic library.  Screw every other reason, you must have a PS2 first.

So lets look at pros and cons

PS2 Pros

  • Cheap
  • Games can be cheap, if you can find them
  • Great library, if you can find them
  • Backwards compatible with PS1 games

PS2 Cons

  • The PS2 does not have a future.  Yes, it is still getting a small trickle of games, but most of those can either be gotten on the Wii or would be something you really don't want and each month that selection of new games gets smaller and smaller.
  • Games are out of print, meaning you have to hunt for some possibly pricey games.
  • The PS2 does not support HD when the OP decides to upgrade (2010 according to him) he will not be able to take advantage of it.
  • If the OP ever does decide to go online, the PS2 doesn't do that except for a handful of exceptions.
  • The games are not as easy to find as people make tehm out to be (I'm convined the guy above just got lucky if he did get all those)
  • He will not be able to get anything new and it's just in peoples nature to want the new thing

Xbox 360 Pros

  • Access to new games
  • Large library of good online and offline games
  • HD ready
  • Online ready
  • Wireless controllers (one of the things the OP wants)
  • Backwards compatible with many Xbox games
  • Arcade, should he choose to buy a hard drive

Xbox 360 cons

  • Library is not as large as the PS2
  • More expensive than the PS2

Personally, the PS2 cons and the 360 pros make it not a hard for me at least.
