Forums - Gaming - Console Music Games Comparison

I saw an earlier thread that discussed how Guitar Hero: World Tour sold the best on Wii where as Rock Band 2 sold the best on 360 and I was a bit curious how music games did in general on the three current consoles(and for kicks, I'll include PS2). I decided to compare sales of the two main music games Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

Rock Band:

Wii:  1.29 Million
360: 2.29 Million
PS3: 0.82 Million
PS2: 0.70 Million

Rock Band 2:

Wii:  0.51 Million
360: 1.54 Million
PS3: 0.56 Million
PS2: 0.20 Million

Total Sales for Rock Band:

Wii:  1.80 Million
360: 3.82 Million
PS3: 1.38 Million
PS2: 0.90 Million

It seems that 360 users prefer Rock Band moreso than Wii, PS3 and PS2 users.

Guitar Hero

PS2: 2.14 Million

Guitar Hero II

PS2: 3.60 Million
360: 2.44 Million

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock

Wii:  4.12 Million
360: 4.14 Million
PS3: 1.83 Million
PS2: 4.51 Million

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (I included this because we had sales data on it)

Wii:  0.82 Million
360: 0.71 Million
PS3: 0.44 Million
PS2: 0.52 Million

Guitar Hero IV: World Tour

Wii:  2.75 Million
360: 1.83 Million
PS3: 1.10 Million
PS2: 1.08 Million

Total Guitar Hero Sales

Wii: 7.69 Million
360: 9.12 Million
PS3: 3.37 Million
PS2: 11.85 Million

As I had predicted, the PS2 would take be the console that sold the most Guitar Hero games due to the fact it was released on it. But the 360 was close due to the fact that Guitar Hero 2 was released on it as well.

Total Rockband & Guitar Hero Sales

So, when you add up the sales for each console, you get:

Wii:  9.49 Million
360: 12.95 Million
PS3: 4.75 Million
PS2: 12.75 Million

Now, prior to this article, I predicted that the PS2 would be first due to the fact that Guitar Hero had started on PS2. But, the 360 managed to edge out on top with it's large sales in the Rock Band franchise. This actually perplexes me a bit. I can understand the PS3 being dead last. I presume that most PS3 users tend to own an HDTV and games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band don't work well on most HDTV's(It didn't work well on mine), so, I figured that most music game lovers would purchase the game for a console they ran on a SDTV, such as the PS2 or Wii. But the fact the 360 edged out on top baffles me. I guess that many 360 users don't own an HDTV or have an HDTV that doesn't cause the game to lag would be an obvious answer. The Wii, however, has a decent numbers of overall sales, and since it sold the most copies of Guitar Hero: World Tour, one can predict that the Wii's Guitar Hero userbase is growing.

But it seems that Xbox 360 users love to strum their fake guitars the most. :)

(Bah, my first pseudo-article thingy I posted. xP I know it's not the coolest thing but I was definitely wrong with what I had initially thought)

Around the Network

The advantage for 360 on Rockband over Wii is due to timed exclusiveness.

The advantage it has gained over the PS2 overall is because the PS2 is a dieing platform

The advantage the X360 gets in general is because these games are very America-centric, where the X360 had the sales lead only 10 months ago, and the Wii is probably only recently catching up on the more accurate measure of "months of ownership" that The Source or DKII uses.
