Forums - Sony - GDC 09: God of War will not be locked at 60 FPS

Yesterday at GDC, God of War programmers Jim Tilander and Vassily Fillipov showed off the technology behind the programming behemoth God of War III.  While speaking to the attendees, the programmers confirmed the game will not be running at 60 FPS, as previously speculated, the game will dip and dive during the more intense action sequences.  However, if you're fearing another stuttering, jittery mess that was Heavenly Sword, don't worry - the game will never fall below 30 FPS.

The change in framerate is noticeable in the clip shown at the presentation, which can be seen here(although its still an early build of the game).  This isn't really surprising, considering none of the previous God of War games were locked in at 60 FPS, and dipped below that pretty regularly.  Neither Fillipov nor Tilander mentioned if there would be a way to lock the games framerate, an option that some games with similar framerate spectrums offer.

God of War III is a third person action adventure game, developed by Sony's internal Santa Monica team.  The heavily antcipated title is tentatively dated for a late 2009 release.

Well I didn't have a problem with Heavenly Sword and this doesn't bother me either, comments?

It drops only at certain points, but remains @ 60 for the majority of the game! This doesn't bother me in the slightest....in fact I want this game......NOW!

I do too.  I don't see how people could say that this doesn't look amazing, The gameplay looks so EPIC!

Only the Most nitpicky of people will complain of such a minor detail.

All games drop at some points. If they say they don't, they are lying. At least they are telling the truth.

Actually, it depends on how the game drops.  If it drops from 60 to 45 FPS, that will be noticeably bad even though 45 is still great FPS.  That's why most console games lock at 30.

Note, I'm not saying God of War III will do that, I'm just saying that's the danger you face when you doni't lock the FPS on a console.

I don't care as long as I don't notice. As long as it's not as bad as Ninja Gaiden 2, most people won't give a crap.

Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^

i think your eye can only see the diffenence if it have really fast action.

you eye mainly can only see 24fps.

GOW I&II were all 60FPS but not locked and the framerate dipped when there was too much action on screen

tbh I didn't notice it back then and I know this because Tim Ross programmer with the GOW team said it in his blog

if those kind of dips they are talking about then good because I myself didn't notice anything

I remember people were talking about the Killzone 2 frame rate drops but I haven't been bothered by it.

Hmmm, this still bugs me: how can some of you guys not notice a drop in framerate? I understand you can't see a thing from 60 to 58 or something like that, but below 50... It's practically impossible to not notice it.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...
