GDC 09: Bungie Still Working on Halo 3 Content

More is likely on the way after the ODST expansion and Mythic Map Pack ship.

March 25, 2009 - At the Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco, Bungie producer Allen Murray gave a talk about the studio's production process, which has gone through a major evolution of late. Formerly a one-project shop, Bungie has changed its approach to facilitate the development of multiple projects simultaneously. That's good news for gamers.

We've known for some time that Bungie is working on an entirely new intellectual property, and Murray noted that a development team is hard at work on that project. But that doesn't mean Bungie plans to close the book on Halo 3 after the ODST expansion ships this summer. According to Murray, the studio just finished a crunch -- a short period of intense production to meet a development milestone -- on ODST and another project, which he didn't name.

He could have been referring to the Mythic Map Pack, which was bundled with the Halo Wars Limited Edition in early March and will be distributed over Xbox Live on April 9. Or he could have been hinting that there's another expansion, multiplayer pack or surprise on the way.

"Halo 3 took two and a half years to make, and we're still working on it," Murray said. "We'll probably be working on it for two more years."

Murray's talk didn't delve into any details about Bungie's non-Halo 3 work, but the studio is definitely keeping busy. "We're working on multiple projects right now," he said.

maybe more singleplayer :D. or more awesome maps, either is fine with me, i love you Bungie

It would be foolish for them to stop supporting Halo 3. Seems like easy money.

M$ will do what it takes to keep Bungie games exclusive...that's why they let these guys spin off. If M$ is willing to fund their efforts, they will keep working on M$ projects...why go out and do all the marketing crap, when someone will keep you 100% employed? BTW...I'm thinking Console exclusive...they could make games for Mac or Handhelds, but for consoles, M$ will try to keep them exclusive to the xbox family.

Nice, glad they are still supporting the game.

That would be so amazing!!!!

But have 50 people that could play online as spartans and fight wave after wave of hundreds of covenant troops...that would be a dream come true

Summer? Bungie was claiming Fall before.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Wow. Bungie is now saying that they have no plans for Halo 3 content. Doesn't necessarily rule it out but its kind of surprising.

ODST really does mark end of Bungie Halo News

News by Rob Purchese

Yesterday

Bungie has told Eurogamer there really are "no plans" for new Halo 3 content beyond Halo 3: ODST after all.

That familiar stance was temporarily upended this week by game producer Allen Murray, who said the studio would work on Halo 3 for "probably" two more years.

"We'll never say never, but currently Bungie has no plans to make new Halo 3 content beyond the release of ODST," Bungie told us. "We will, however, continue to support the Halo 3 online experience with regular updates to matchmaking playlists and wield the Banhammer as needed.

"With Forge and the Mythic map Sandbox we're already seeing the community stepping up to create some great new maps and gametypes that will offer more variety and longevity to the game down the road.

The future of Halo 3 online will become more and more defined by the people who play it," added the developer.

Halo 3: ODST will launch exclusively on Xbox 360 this autumn. Before then, on 9th April, Bungie will launch the Mythic Map Pack on Xbox Live.

LOL. Eurogamer, you are not special, Bungie told the rest of the world the exact same thing in their update.
