Forums - Gaming Discussion - Would anyone really buy onlive?

I mean it great concept but how much PC gamers and console gamers would sacrifice hardware R&D for a system based solely on software (specifically the net). There are a lot of things to consider when dealing with the net. Imagine all data for PC & console gamers being processed on on central network of servers. All the hackers in the world would have an orgy, i mean hacking into consoles is not a problem now. But connect consoles to PC and other hardware all over the net and hackers would only need to go to this central server a all hell would break loose. I like the concept but as for me as long as Consoles and better PC are produced i'll buy them. What do you think would you get onboard with onlive service.

I'm wondering how buying the service would work, do you buy a game for $50 and you play it whenever? or do you rent it and can play for a short period, or do you just pay a flat rate for the month, and you can play any game that they have. Because if the latter is the case, I don't think the industry is going to be helped out in any way if you never have to buy a game again.

On topic, I probably wouldn't, for awhile at least until I see if it works and I have a faster internet connection.

Well for starters, their server clusters would be secure. Just as hackers have a hard time getting into all the other server clusters that businesses use (Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc), they would have a hard time getting into these, and would require a very good hacker at that.

I would get OnLive if it comes out and actually works. I have plenty of doubts though, so I guess it is a wait and see type of thing for me. Latency (although I have super fast internet) seems like the real issue. Plus, if they want to host multiplayer games, the farther the distance, the more the latency so with all the controller information and video streaming back and forth, I would expect some pretty drastic delay.

I won't get it, that's for sure.

Nintendo still doomed?
Feel free to add me on 3DS or Switch! (PM me if you do ^-^)

Not even if it actually works and is like a $10 per month subscription for any game you want?

I can't play PC games anymore because now I only use a laptop and there's no justifying a high-end PC just for games.

So yes, I'd definately consider this.

All depends on costs/service though.

If it works I would absolutely buy it. I would love to have a system that did not take up all the space of current consoles, was quiet, and had no stacks of game cases lying around. Those are not major complaints currently but changing them would be a good thing, my wife would be happy at least. I doubt this is going to happen anytime soon, mostly from connection speeds, but when it does I think it is a great thing.

Insane idea and if it is implemented correctly and most importantly...

IF IT ACTUALLY WORKS... And with good prices and payment plans then hell they have a customer.

Pretty sure you have to pay a subscription in addition to buying or renting the games.

"nightsurge" i'm sure it'll be secure but having so much gaming info one place would draw the attention of many hackers and when people work together there bound to break in and when that happens us the persons paying for the service will feel it. Not only that what would happpen if the service was down, No gaming, Hell No. Also if you can only rent the games what about titles that you want to own. Not only that as the amount of consumers increase latency will be a big issue. I'm just saying I like the assurity that if I buy a hardware as long as there is power it will work independent of anything else. Thats the same problem i have with the concept of digital downloads. People will always Want CD's Due to the fact we like to have physical backup of our media that is in close range. The net is great but putting so much of our lives on it our dependency of the net will become a problem in the future as more information is stored on centralized servers.
