Play Chrono Trigger on a SNES emulator on you PC. It´s not cliched, with freedom, not convoluted story. It also has a nice pacing between gameplay, cutscenes. Once you play that and like it you could move to more "stereotypical" JRPGs. I don´t recommend you FF1-5 to start with since they are a loop of fighting-cutscene-buy new equip-net dungeon. Same thing with DQ, it´s traditional battle system is generally seen as old nowadays. FF6 on the other hand is good for starters.

I don´t recommend you any JRPG considering the consoles you have. ToV, LO, TLR are not good for starters. SO4 would be the only JRPG you could try, though it´s a bit anime-style, doesn´t have the freedom the first 2 in the series had and is slightly cliched. Though it does have many optional stuff to do, much more than just extra dungeons.

What are you talking about? ToV is a great way to start getting into the jrpg genre because of its battle system. SO4 seems like a great way to get into the jrpg genre as well though. You should just get both and see where that gets you.

I think I'm going with ToV because the battle system seems bad ass and the story is emotional (I guess)

You have made a good chose. When do you plan on getting it?

Don't listen to twesterm, get FFVI on the SNES if you can, it's better.

Everything else he said is completely right. Nothing to add.

agreed here the soundtrack is too epic to be failed up with gba blips.

Tales are not the best way to start into the JRPG franchise because they fall under the "stereotypical" JRPGs. But if someone is into anime and knows about mediocre anime then Tales is a good start.

@Khuutra: Isn´t Tales heavy stuff? If you can digest the story, plot and cliches from the start then you can enjoy many other JRPGs imo.

What do you mean by that?

I mean that Tales are heavily influenced by anime and not the stellar ones, but the typical mediocre anime.

So your saying that Tales games are mediocre?

1. NO, every FF title is NEW

2. Suikoden, Wild Arms, SMT, Chrono, Tales, SO and many more just look into gamefaqs and see the list

3. BOTH, depends on your taste when it comes to story.

And for the argument above, tales is not a bad thing to play when starting for RPG since it has an easy gameplay to adapt, one of the easiest IMO though I highly prefer that you start and test w/ both Action and turn based style and see w/ suits you more
