2 Arrested After Man Abducted, Stabbed In Clay County

Investigators Believe Man, Woman Set Up, Intended To Kill Victim

UPDATED: 9:20 pm EDT March 19, 2009

Clay County detectives announced Thursday evening the arrests of two suspects in the kidnapping and attempted killing of a Jacksonville man who showed up at a Hardee's restaurant in the middle of the night with stab wounds.

Clay County deputies found the stabbing victim's car on fire in a remote area in Middleburg.

James Waters, 52, was hospitalized after he was found at 3 a.m. outside the restaurant on Blanding Boulevard."He said 'Call 911, I've been stabbed,'" said Hardee’s employee Ellen Yown.

"He said his girlfriend ... it was a set him up."

Investigators said Waters was stabbed four times and had to make it a mile to reach a business that was open.

Detectives said they believe Waters was kidnapped overnight in Clay County, driven to an ATM machine and forced to withdraw money, then was beaten and stabbed. He escaped from his abductors and ran to the Hardee's to get help."In my opinion, they intended to kill him," Detective Matt Edmonson said. "Sheer will to live. He just wasn't ready to die.

"Waters' car was found about 8:30 a.m. in a vacant lot on Foreman Circle in Middleburg. It was gutted by fire.Deputies said they picked up a man and a woman, 39-year-old Darrell Thornton and 39-year-old Lisa Mullis, about an hour after the car was found and the two were questioned and later arrested.Edmonson said the pair knew Waters and he believes they invited to come to a Clay County address with the intention of robbing and killing him.

"As soon as he walked in the house, he was beat over the head with a gun, forced to get into his own vehicle after he was tied up and taken to several banks to withdraw money," Edmonson said.Mullis and Thornton are both charged with attempted murder, carjacking, armed robbery and arson.Despite the extent of his injuries, Waters was released from the hospital on Thursday afternoon. He briefly spoke with Channel 4's Adam Landau, but said he was still too shaken up to talk about the attack.

Awesome. Making the world a safer place one attempted murder at a time. I'm glad the guy is ok. Did the article mention your brother?

My uncle is a detective and made some major drug busts in my home town once.  It was a pretty proud moment.

I'd buy him a beer but I'm kinda on the wrong continent... and underage.

Lots of the police don't get the respect they deserve, they are stereotyped due to the corrupt cops out there.
