You are right, there are different factions within the Republican Party (although I think that is less true now than it was during Bush's term at least in terms of their representation in Washington). But the problem is that the party takes an either you or with us or against us approach, even with its own members. That is just wrong, and I don't agree with it. The three Republican senators who voted for the Obama bailout were demonized. Is that such a good idea when losing only one of those senators would likely result in a filibuster-proof majority for the Republicans?
I don't think a party should take an all or nothing approach on just about any issue. I don't have a problem with the fact that there are pro-life Democrats, or pro-gun rights Democrats. I don't think we should expel them from the party like many Republicans think about those who are pro-choice. Its absurd.

Joe Liberman ring a bell? The democrats do the same thing.
Also there are Pro-Choice republicans... you just don't notice them I think because your more focused on the democrats being a democrat.
A couple familiar and probably surprising names.
Arlen Spector and Ted Stevens. Though of course the latter is no longer a republican.
The funny thing being that I believe PA's other senator is a pro-life democrat.

And what did they end up doing with Joe Lieberman? They didn't hang him out to dry. He got to keep some of the best chairmanship positions in the Senate.
And what he did was arguably worse than what those Republican senators did, who were lambasted even by Republicans outside Washington. I mean calling out Obama as not ready to lead and supporting your party's opponent in a presidential race is a pretty big deal. But the Democrats made the wise decision to get over it.
