Forums - Gaming - PSX Poll For BEST STORY in Gaming -- MGS4 WINS, FF7 comes Second! thoughts?

Well you have to think. FFVII came out in 1997 and it had recently the best storyline and now MGS4 does. Over the years storys do get better and they also get worse so it was sooner or later that this was going to happen. Altho FFVII is a great game!!! (havent played MGS4)

I think I would probably put the God of War franchise over the MGS franchise in terms of storytelling - not in terms of plot, mind you. Just that the writers of God of War know their own material, know how to parse it down, and don't have their heads up their own collective ass.

Take from that comparison what you will.

I disagree because of their complete butchering of greek literature.

As i've said before... the whole thing looks like it was written by a guy who got drunk while watching Hercules the Legendary Journies capped off by Chronicles of Riddick.

Cause gameplay is relevent in a storyline discussion?

The story is horrible, it doesn't play true to the actual source matieral... if you don't realize this... well I don't know what to tell you.  Go read a book on greek mythology?

No two sources of Greek mytholog build on the same story anyway, and faithfulness to Homer's stories is by no means a proper barometer for good storytelling. Hell, the way in which they subvert the character of the original Kratos is great, if somewhat meat-headed.

The story is sitll told effectively, and it holds to its genre, knowing what's important to communicate.

Umm hey kid when do games have to play yo "actual source matieral"? Im sorry i know how Greek mythology is but you cant say GoW has a terrible storyline because well..... it doesnt. Get over yourself not everything you say is true.

The comparison isn't fair. People who rate MGS4 as the best played previous games. So they are claiming several games are better than one. It doesn't make any sense. It's like me saying 5 movies (all sequels) are better than one. In addition, Mafia had the best story in gaming.

When refrencing source matieral one should stay true to it.

Otherwise you are simply using it because you are too lazy to come up with your own characters and want a quick impose where people will go "hey yeah i know those guys."

By not being true to the source matieral they proved one of two things

A) They didn't know the source matieral

B) They didn't care and were too lazy or untalented to come up with a viable story.

It's pretty simple really.

So a story is meant to stay true to actual events that happened or myths? A story can be a good story if it is not true to the events of said story. This way stories are not bogged down to realms of reality. If stories kept to entirely factual formulas they would get Monotous very fast.

True to the events?  Perhaps not.

True to the character within those events.  Yes.

Otherwise your setting is pointless other then being used as an attention grabber.
