Forums - Gaming - EA jumps ship with Lord of the Rings IP. Returns back to Warner?

Noooo. I'd never thought I'd hate to see EA lose control over a franchise, but this means no Battle for Middle-earth III when the Hobbit films come out!

@Staude: Except BFME was actually good, unlike Generals. And it was BFMEII that was based on the Generals engine, and it fused components of BFMEI and General. Overall, it was quite different from Generals with the heroes, ranks, battalions, etc.

the engine was the same.. in basics.

Westwood first used it for cnc64, then emporor battle for dune, then they made a spinoff used for cnc renegade and then they were working on a new version for their cnc 3 game (tiberian incoursion .. see above).. they were also using it for renegade 2 which EA decided to stop shortly before closing westwood because they aparently didn't want it competing with battlefield...

EA has later used the engine for bfme 1, 2 cnc3 and red alert 3.

The engine is known as the w3d engine and i work on it, in the fashion of a total conversion mod based upon the renegade litteration :p

Generals does not deserve the Command & Conquer name. Red Alert >>> Tiberium >> Generals.

With zero hour it was barely playable, but not only that, it wasn't a command & conquer game anymore than age of empires. They changed everything in that game.. for the worse and the story is completely unrelated to the series in any way.

Ishmael once said how the story was intertwined in their concept. (meaning westwoods)

Red alert 1 - Tiberian Dawn - Tiberian Sun - Tiberian Incoursion

                                                          \

                                                            Red alert 2

Basically, in red alert 1. ... Our history was seperated from the cnc one by einstein removing hitler. Now what he actually did was removing hitler from that place and creating a alternate timeline because of it.. it had no effect on our own. Meanwhile Kane plotted for the brotherhood of Nod. Aparently Kane was sent to walk earth for all eternity or whatever, a lot of questions still sourround him though, as to how he knew about the scrin, the taticus.. and other relevant questions in the cnc universe. (Time travelling device ala chronosphere is something that some has concidered)

In either case, Kane started building his army unknown to the world and when the tiberium meteor crashed in early 90s, a company named "Nod" was the only one with a compatible harvester able to harvest these tiberium crystals that poisoned the land. Selling machines to Allied nations funded the nod army and soon they rose to oppose the allied nations, whom then formed the global defense initiative as a counter messure (since nod was not a army of a specific country but rather a terrorist organisation with people from many countries acting independently)

.. well i'm going into too many details here, but in tiberian sun, after kane was presumed dead and returned.. well frankly he was once again believed to be dead XD some weird stuff happened after such as cabal and a unity between the AI cabal and kane that EA chose to ignore, i've got no clue what westwoods vision with that exacly was.

After tiberian sun, a aculyte of kanes, named Yuri, travelled back in time to obtain the last remaining psycic suit from red alert 1 (aparently) .. this launched him into a alternate timeline again which spawned red alert 2...

In tiberian incoursion (or twilight as a fan favorate name) there were supposedly a lot of teams, including GDI, Nod, Cabal, Scrin and the Forgotten (mutants who rise up and create their own faction as a response to the harsh conditions on earth and the fact that they were, forgotten by society and left to die...

That is a rough summerization.. and i've left a lot out.. anyways it should give a vague idea ...

And that's why cnc generals is not a cnc game in my and many others opinion :P

well it didn't happen. It was going to have happened.. and was going to be told in the game i showed some vids off above.. but westwood studios was closed and EA decided to ignore the story completely and make some random causal  thing

Well tbh the story in CnC series wasn't the strongest selling point IMO. The game play was awesome tbh I don't know what are you talking about. the factions were great, the unites were unique and fun to play and the online was one of the best if you ask me

I for one never really cared about Tiberium didn't like at all, but Red Alert 2 was tons of fun and Generals was better to me even if it didn't follow the story line

looking forward to Red Alert 3 on PS3 if it supports Mouse & Keyboard
