selnor, Gears 2 has been hovering around the number 4 spot on the weekly live activity charts since the first of December. Halo 3, CoD4, and CoD WaW are moving around the top 3.

Here is the list for the whole of 2008 figures put together.
http://majornelson.com/archive/2009/01/04/the-top-20-live-games-of-2008.aspx
Notice Halo 3 was most played NOT COD4. Also notice that Gears 2 is 4th even though the top 3 had stats for the entire year and Gears 2 had just under 2 months.
And again in 2007 when Halo 3 and COD 4 were released COD 4 was owned again.

Notice that Gears 1 beat COD4 but the same as 08 applies here. Gears 1 had the entire year, wheras COD 4 didnt. Bear in mind Halo 3 didnt have entire year and still came top.
I predict for 2009
1. Halo 3
2. Gears 2
3. COD WAW
COD4 may be the most played on PSN and the most liked. But it is not the case with LIVE. Definately Halo 3 has a ton more features, and is way more fun. Also the COD4 maps arent that great.
i agree with selnor. halo 3 has the best online multiplayer ever. it used to be cod4 for me for a while, but halo 3 took the crown back.
isn't world at war a part of this too ? it is a cod 4 award but do you think they seperates their servers ? i doubt it.
Next time you goto BlockBuster or your local game rental store, check out how many more COD4 copies they have on the 360 as opposed to the PS3. I would imagine that this is part of the reason as well. Atleast here in the States.

They wouldn't bother ordering so many more 360 copies if the demand wasn't there.
Currently playing on PS3: God of War III
Currently playing on Xbox360: Final Fantasy XIII
Currently playing on NDS: Chrono Trigger

After playing COD4 on veteran the experience was ruined. They made infinite respawning enemies which took away any strategy of war. Go on load the game up, and play on veteran. Now snipe some guys held up in a farmhouse. 2 hours later you will still be able to snipe the same guard for the thousandth time. Very dissapointing. And I dont know about PSN figures. But the top 2 most regularly played games on Live is Halo 3 and Gears 2. So 360 owners may be spoilt for more choice with better online shooters if they choose not to play COD4. |
you do know that on every cod, respawning enemies is a fact of the game? The entire series of cod is based upon you pushing up and going past some imaginary line that ends spawning for that area, you then move onto the next area and have to go past another line etc etc. I think thats what many people and mags liked about it-how everything happens in massive doses, not little bits. Plus of course you thinking gears and halo 3 are better than cod4 as online shooters is entirely your opinion.

How convenient of you to forget
20million PS3 v 29millionX360 (year and a half headstart)
Has the gap change that much since CoD4:MW? Take a million?
I've got 4 COD4 accounts. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^
Selnor, what you should realize is that those Major Nelson lists do not imply the most played online game. Just the rankings of games in terms of how many unique users have played. Yearly figures for that kind of statistic is pretty much worthless.
The weekly data tells a bit more. Notice how Gears 2 had the most UU(Unique Users) the week it came out and then dropped down steadily in the subsequent weeks. This shows us that it did not have the staying power to keep people coming back that CoD4 and Halo 3 had.
CoD4 is definitely played more on Live than Gears 2.
