Forums - Gaming - Will there ever be a JRPG as well known as FF7? A FF7-Killer, if you may.

Good point, SmokedHostage. I never even think of the Pokémon-series as JRPGs, but yeah, that series is way more influental and made more impact than FF7 could ever hope to do on it's own.

Yes, the Entire Pokemon series definately blows final fantasy 7 out of the water. But that's 4 generations of games, from Blue, to Silver, to Saphire, to Pearl and all the other pokemon games in comparison to 1. Pokemon Blue on it's own however? I think Final Fantasy 7 definately beats it. Comparing a series of games to 1 isn't exactly fair.

Pokemon Series > Final Fantasy 7

Final Fantasy 7 > Any Single Pokemon Game.

Even if you want to treat Pokemon Blue, Red, and Yellow as separate games, each of them sold fifteen million copies. Any single Pokemon game from the first two generations stomps FFVII into the dirt.

eh... y'all talking about pokemon, and i don't even know a single thing about it... So in my happy little universe ff7 beats any pokemon till infinity.

always thought pokemon was a little bit childish?

sorry. forgot my OT

eh no... that ship has sailed long time ago

I learned that pokemon video games exist at all only after i started reading this site :D While FF VII is known even among hardcore pc gamers like me.

Whether or not you guys know it personally has nothing to do withi t. Pokemon was and is a cultural phenomenon that has sold more games per entrant in the series than anybody has a right to. I think pretty much only the Wii and GTA series are beating it out in terms of sales-per-game, and maybe not GTA.

The question posed by the OP is whether or not another JRPG will ever be as well-known as FFVII. Pokemon already stomped FFVII to death years ago.

I disagree Khuutra. The way I see it Pokemon is only well known to its specific audience(enormously big audience though). It hasnt made an impact on the industry as big as FFVII has.

In my country, there are rarely any people that know Final Fantasy, let alone VII. I haven't met a person that doesn't know Pokemons.

The continued popularity of the animated series would disagree with you - as well as the size of its audience at the height of its power, and the fact that its audience is still large enough to break 20 million units sold every generation.

The question isn't even about "impact", though the collecting-and-controlling-of monsters impact of Pokemon is difficult to overstate, since it ended up having a lot to do with the eventual success of Yu-Gi-Oh and what have you. It's about being well known. For years, everyone in the United States and Japan knew what Pokemon was - I odn't know how it was in Europe, but once you go beyond the very narrow demograhic of the Internet Gamer Nerd, Pokemon is literally incomparable in its genre.

oh yea it's not even close.  Pokemon was way bigger even if you are just talking about Red/Blue vs FF7.  Pokemon was far more well known and it stomps all over FF7's sales.  That is what the thread is about, i see too many people bringing up off topic excuses.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

pokemon its quite limited to be considered a full blown jrpg, even if my time i bougt yellow gold and silver.
but pales in comparison to how awesome FF is or even FF7.
