Forums - Sony - Installing a new OS.

I once had YDL on my PS3, and since took it off. I have since installed a bigger HDD, and was thinking about re installing another OS.

My question is though, now that my HDD is full of shit that I would have to re download, is there any way to partition a few GBS for an OS outside of wiping everything off of it?

you can use the back up utility but you will need a REALLY BIG usb HDD.

u could try to borrow one or rent one if you can.

you can't make a partiton without formating , for operating systems also more save to format and make the partition, you may lock up your HDD or lost data.

Why not back it up on an external HDD.

I wish there was a network backup. Over sftp would be ideal!

But oh well

You'll need a usb hard disk to back up and not lose everything.

What do you gain by installing a new OS? Is there something you're looking to do with it or is it just for fun?

I think at the top of everyone's list when they install Linux on their ps3 is Mame.

Yeah, emulators, so I can get rid of my huge modded xbox.

And just for lulz.

You can also use vlc which will play pretty well any media file you throw at it (for those few that the PS3 can't play natively due to lack of codecs).

I successfully installed YDL 6.1 on my ps3.

I'm actually posting from it now.

Now, aside from a few resolving issues, my PS3 just got alot more useful.
