As big chains are slashing real prices, so they take the full merit of the de facto new lower price,I'm more and more persuaded that Sony should split the widely predicted total 2009 cut of $/€100 in two parts, one, smaller, in April, the second, bigger at the beginning of Xmas season. The first cut would allow smaller shops too to apply more appealing prices and avoid being left in the shit by bigger chains' real prices now excessively lower than what they can do. In January 2008 PS3 production cost was $400, now it should be around $250, but this should be more or less the price retailers pay it, cutting MSRP to $369 would mean losing initially at most $30 per unit on those sold to bigger chains, possibly not losing even a cent on those sold in small quantities to smaller shops and most probably not losing a cent across EU whichever the retailer.
Anyway a $369 PS3 should lose less than a $200 XB 360 arcade, industrial cost of a 80GB HDD + (BDD - DVD drive) + (Cell - Xenon) isn't even close to $169 now.
Edit: @Lolcislaw:
Cutting price in two times makes MS reaction more difficult too, a $30 first cut couldn't be answered with a lower cut by MS, as it would be insignificant, so the next cut, if countered too, would mean for MS to do an excessive total cut during this year.
