Forums - General - The Watchmen Movie is Terrible

It offends all of my sensibilities, both as a literary fan of the graphic novel and as a movie goer. Awful, awful, awful movie, and I hate it.

I don't hate you if you like it! It does have some "bad-ass" parts.

But I hated this movie.

As point of reference, I loved Iron Man and thought 300 was pretty good for what it was. My favorite comics book movies are Iron man and Road to Perdition.

But not Watchmen.

hmm, Im not big on comic book and graphic novel movies but was looking forward to this one.

I thought 300 was a stupid ham-fisted cheese fest. No way am I seeing Watchmen now.

I went this night... I'm on the fence. There where some parts I greatly enjoyed like the alternating history - the flower girl in front of the MP's really happened... the next sequence did not.

I liked the fight scenes. I liked the ultra violence. But the movie dragged a bit and was sometimes too jumbled, hard to follow. I understand, you can't put the full novel in a movie and from what I heard Snyder did a good job with that but I will not be seeing it again I think.

Also, way too much blue dong.

Funny thing was, my mate thought it was the worst movie he had ever seen.

Don't bother seeing it if you haven't read the graphic novel. The graphic novel is a masterpiece, one of the greatest pieces of literature to ever come out of the medium, but without that point of reference for understanding the narrative of the film comes across as borderline schizophrenic. There is little transition between ideas, too much jumping about, and little attempt to establish the relevance of any ofi t. I understood it but only insofar as I read the book and I was aware of the missing pieces.

This narrative was not meant to be a movie, and it shows. It borders on incompatible with the medium.

And I bet he never read the novel. Right?

I thought the ultra violence and fight scenes sort of missed the point of the novel, which was more about implied violence and the fact that these are nominally normal people going around doing crazy things. Ozymandias should be the only uber bad-ass in the cast - but if your only experience is with the movie, then it looks like Rorschach could whip Batman's ass so hard that it'd make your head spin.

I heard it was okay, not terrible.

Nintendo still doomed?

I enjoyed it. No idea what the fuck was going on, but it was super gory and stylish.

I'm sorry, that just slipped out...

There's the problem.

Would it be possible for me to convince you that reading the comic is worthwhile?

If you liked 300 and disliked Watchmen then I am convinced that the Watchmen must be good.
