So can we have a show of hands to see who here actually believes that every Playstation and Playstation 2 sale was to a "new user."

Well considering the PS2 only sold 10 million more then the PS1, id say that most were just getting a PS2 after owning a PS1.

You're also ignoring the fact that the greater majority of Ps2 owners are 'casual'.

Then ask yourself which console is a casual user more likely to buy?

Plus, you must consider that EVERY gen the 3rd party majority support goes to the console who has the biggest user base a couple years in, who is that console?

Since that console will get the majority of support, it will have the best overall game selection of all types of games, thus again I ask where do you think these casual Ps2 gamers will go?

Answer is the same to all questions: Wii.

No guarantee that everybody from last gen is jumping into this gen. I know people who never bought another console after the Nes. Same for the Super Nes, and the N64. I definitely know people who are more than happy with the PS2. I think that last gen hit the "sweet spot" with what consumers wanted in their consoles. This gen is more or less icing on the cake.

i have seen a common fallacy here, the backlog of PS2 games are not needed to support the $400 price tag on a PS3. The value comes from recharagable controllers, free online, and blu ray ! You dont buy a PS3 to play ps2 games and if you do have a lot of ps2 games, well uh keep your ps2.

Gonna have to explain that one, not quite sure what you are saying.

Raise your hand if you think every PSx and PS2 user was a brand new purchaser of a PSx or PS2 (i.e. they were not replacing older/broken PSx or PS2)

Keep your hand down if you think quite a few PSx and PS2 sales were do to people having to rebuy their PSx or PS2 because their first one either broke or they wanted the slim version.

Are you still on Wikipedia or something? The PS2 is over 20 million ahead of PS1 on this website... and there are arguably some sales missing from obscure regions... so it is probably more like 25 million.

Ahh yes... I was thinking he was using "new user" to mean someone who hadn't bought a game before like I was using "new gamer" in my previous post.

I read somewhere sony said it sold about 130 million PS1s before they stopped selling it. Last major numbers showed the PS2 at 140 million. Even still 25 million more PS2s sold is good. I still think most PS1 owners went out and bought a PS2. N64 owners bought the gamecube, and Saturn owners bought the xbox after sega went to software.
