Disregarding retro-active cannon-books that says otherwise; I thought Ultimecia was one of the greatest villain of all time in JRPG base purely on an already rubbished fanboy theories that was plain sensational

Rinoa is Ultimecia

The combination of stylistic similiarity between models, the many odd references (GF Griever anyone?) and the mystery that is Ultimecia's origin give rise to the speculation that she is actually Rinoa.

Not only was this mindblowing in JRPG terms but it makes scary sense and is a far better yarn than ANYTHNING square produced retroactively.

Its ironic tha the most awesome FF villain (Aside from Kefka) I've witness to date is only so awesome thanks to urban myth and fanboy speculation.

You have a pretty bland intellectual palatte if you find this percieved, insipid garbage to be 'mindblowing'.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

I kid you not, I held to this theory until... uh... eighteen hours ago.

I refuse to accept the retro-active piece of cannon, the mystery was part of the reason why I think FFVIII > VII

No neeed to be all jerkish there Rambo.

The primary reason that that particular idea was appealing is that it completely recolored the entirety of the game and lent new meaning to everything that transpired during a second playthrough. My personal interpretation was that Squall became Griever, refusing to leave Rinoa even as she went insane, even knowing that they would end up essentially destroying the world before being killed by themselves. The game was billed as "the greatest love story ever told" and with this idea it shifted from "this guy like totally loves this chick man you have no idea" to "these two are so much in love that they are willing to destroy all creation so as to always be with one another".

It was awesome, terrifying, and completely contradictory to every expectation one had about their romance, and it implied in the ending that when Squall chose not to die that he was choosing to destroy the world altogether instead of leaving Rinoa by herself.

I understand if that doesn't appeal to you, but compared to what the story actually was, it was absolutely fantastic.

It's not even that. My entire assumption hinged on the idea that Squall became Griever. In Japanese, though, Ultimecia says she's creating Griever on the spot from the depths of Squall's imagination, making real his version of what the ultimate guardian force would be.

It kind of shot a big gaping hole in the only lynchpin I had for the whole idea.

The game's a lot less poignant to me now.

FFVIII would be a lot better if the Rinoa = Ultimicia theory was true and it fit the game
