No not this year.
effectively it will not have any significant push in the market this year, so it depends on what you count as the death of a console.
What I think will happen is this:
Sony pulls the production plug in mid 2009, although they will likely have some stock to keep shipping small amounts for a few months, and a little Christmas 2009 stockpile too... so arguably we won't hear from Sony about the PS2 "production" being stopped until they finish shipping, which means FY ending March 2010 probably.
As for actual sales, I think it will follow what the GBA did 2 years previously.
This time 2 years ago the GBA was selling about 55-60k per week.... that slowly dwindled later in 2007 to about 20k per week worldwide until a modest Christmas boost.... then sales dropped like a stone after that.
I think the PS2 will stretch it out a little longer than that, but not much.... so this time next year we might be seeing weekly worldwide sales around 20-25k, dwindling down through the year to only a few 1000 per week until a few tiny, stock clearing 5k boost for Christmas weeks.
