After long run on market,Ps2 is still selling even tho Ps3 has been out for few years.

Now it seems like it could start thinking to rest in peace...

So can Sony finaly let Ps2 rest in peace in late 2009?

no it needs to burn in hell :P
i think that companies are starting to stop making games forr it (including sony) so i think thet sony is going to keep making it but with no new games coming out not many people r going to buy it

No not this year.

effectively it will not have any significant push in the market this year, so it depends on what you count as the death of a console.

What I think will happen is this:

Sony pulls the production plug in mid 2009, although they will likely have some stock to keep shipping small amounts for a few months, and a little Christmas 2009 stockpile too... so arguably we won't hear from Sony about the PS2 "production" being stopped until they finish shipping, which means FY ending March 2010 probably.

As for actual sales, I think it will follow what the GBA did 2 years previously.
This time 2 years ago the GBA was selling about 55-60k per week.... that slowly dwindled later in 2007 to about 20k per week worldwide until a modest Christmas boost.... then sales dropped like a stone after that.
I think the PS2 will stretch it out a little longer than that, but not much.... so this time next year we might be seeing weekly worldwide sales around 20-25k, dwindling down through the year to only a few 1000 per week until a few tiny, stock clearing 5k boost for Christmas weeks.

Yes Sony should do it and focuse only on ps3 and psp.

Basically roughly parallel to the green line in this graph... but slightly higher, so where is shows it going down to 20k per week in the middle o the graph (which is late 2007) the PS2 will be nearer 30k-ish... and the slowdown after (2008 for GBA line, 2010 for PS2) will be more elongated.

GBA is doing worse than that and Nintendo keep seing it yet.

Why Sony should give up on a system that is able to move 1~1.5 million units per year?

PS2 will be around here at least till 2011...

no way it still not priced at 100$ yet

Well, Sony will be releasing Motorstorm Arctic Edge for it later this year, and PS2 starts production in Brazil with 450k planned for 2009 rising to 520k in 2011. So I think it still has quite some time until it can be declared dead.

People thought the PS2 would be dead years ago. With a few games still being developed for it, I don't see production halting this year. Maybe next year.

I'm hating the fact that new RPGs are still being released for it while I have so many to collect and play still.

Person 1: Does Valkyria Chronicles have trophies?
Person 2:  No.
Person 1: Forget it. I'm not buying it.
Person 2: Wait! It's amazing! Unique, charming, drop dead gorgeous... Hello?

No. But I do think it will be the first year that a Madden game fails to reach a million on it.
