I remember asking my parents to buy me Mortal Kombat 3.
Woohoo for being a stereotype!

Are you implying that the 3 types of games are M rated games, pink flower JRPGs, and Pokemanz, and that one is for mature people and the other two are for young children who don't know any better?
Are you implying that all Mortal Kombat games are better than all Street Fighter games because they have fatalities?
Are you implying that it's 1992 all over again?
Well, this could have something to do with the fact that many of the high quality games this gen are rated M.
I'm using Gamerankings now, for the reason that these games are high quality, even though you may disagree that they're that high quality. Some of my Ms may not be M though.
Top rated games:
1. GTA IV - M
(World of Goo - E)
2. - LBP - E (?)
3. Bioshock - M
4. Street Fighter IV - M
5. GeoW 2 - M
6. SSB Brawl - T
7. MGS 4 - M (?)
8. Fallout 3 - M
9. Chrono Trigger - ?
(Braid - E?)
10. Rock Band 2 - 7+
11. Killzone 2 - M
12. Okami - 7 + (?)
Those are the 90% + games. I put () on dowloadable ones, and for some reason PC games don't appear when I check.
7 are M rated. That's over half of them.
So when half of the top notch games are M, it's no surprise that it's also the one children are most interested in.
Also, to just back-up the info with VGChartz numbers.
8 of the top 10 best selling games on X360 are rated M.
On the Ps3 it is 7 out of 10.

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS
I played GTA3 when I was 9 years old, the game was a hella lot of fun. I just loved driving over people getting out of the car and kick them! I played it for the fun not the violence. GTA isn't violent anyway, well at least I've never thought of it as violent.
I got Battlefield: Bad Company, and I think that was rated T =/ I don't think blood, gore, sex, and foul language (from the game itself) is necessary for an absolutely amazing online play. It does help in creating a suspense of disbelief for single player though.

Kids today, so desensortised by movies and video games.
If they want to discourage a kids from wanting a game, instead of putting a big M on it, why not try putting a cover image that might discourage them, like chibi characters, or a half naked man.
Hmm, pie.
Hey kids, which game do you want:
1) A game where you do nothing but swim in the ocean (aka endless ocean)
or
2) A fun, bloody shooter

Does the shooter have dolphins or octopi in it?
