NOTE, title should be-- Street Fighter IV -- How do you cancel and other move questions

So I'm reading character FAQ's and trying to get better but I keep seeing people talk about canceling.

What is that and how do I do it?  Every guide I read just seems to assume you know what that means and how to do it.

Also, on the challenge mode, I keep getting stuck on those.  I'm trying to go through El Fuerte at the moment and I get stuck on:

->[crouch] + K
->El Fuerte Dynamite

And I get stuck on all challenge mode moves like that.  I did Ken's once by accident and have no idea what I did differently but I have no idea why it worked that time.

In the El Fuert example above, I'm doing both of the moves.  I'll do the couch+kick and then immediatly do the El Fuerte Dynamite but it never counts it.

What am I doing wrong there?  Any pointers?

Aha, found something here that helps tell me what the terms they use mean:

I glanced at that webpage, but I'm not sure if it answered your question or not, so here goes:

Canceling a move in this case means you perform one move, and then after it hits, you cancel the rest of move (the recovery animation) and start a new move. The general rule is you can cancel normals into specials or supers, and cancel specials into supers. You can't cancel into ultras.

As for how it's done, the trick is that you need to cancel very quickly, or the cancel won't work. For this reason, the important thing to know is that you can start inputting the stick/d-pad motions for a move before you intend to do that move. So for your El Fuertue example, you can do a think of the double-quarter-circle-forward motion for the super as d,df,f,d,df,f. Then, what you actually input is:

d,df,f,d+K,df,f+K

The first K exectues the crouching kick, the second K cancels it into the super. The whole thing is done as one quick motion. (Alternately you could do d+K,df,f,d,df,f+K; you just need to do the motion faster this way. This wasn't as viable in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, but the timing windows are much more lenient in Street Fighter IV.)

Also, you can't cancel all normal moves. The third series of trials is meant to teach you which normals can be cancelled.

Twestern what exactly is the combo the Challenge mode is showing you to do.Because you did not give the strength level of the kick you doing to the super move or anything so give me the exact combo you are trying to do to make it easier to help.

I love fighting games !!! Come on challenge me !

Whoops, sorry, forgot to add that:

-> [crouch]MK

-> El Fuert Dynamite (d,df,f d,df,f + K)

-edit-

whoot, and just got to work from blizzids advice ^^

IDK about SFIV but move canceling usually means performing the first couple hits of a move, and then using the game mechanics to "cancel" what you are doing, and be able to do something else.

I Don't know how to do it in SFIV, but in Dissidia using the dodge ability (R + X) after the first two hits is the same as canceling

Fuck this game!

I just spent an hour or two playing and when I wasn't getting my ass handed to me I was busy hopelessly trying to find a match.

Just because I don't want to cheese people to death and use Ken I get my ass handed to me every time. I realize that El Fuerte isn't the best character but he's at least fun but damnit I can't beat anyone and anyone I play has at least 500 more BP's than me.

El Fuerte is terrible. I realise you want fun but there are better characters than him who are just as fun.

Nice sig btw twes. It really suits you :)

Yeah, but since I don't want to play one of the 12 Ryu clones that doesn't leave me a lot of options.  Besides, El Fuerte isn't that bad, or at least he isn't Dan.

Don't search for matches, turn on arcade request mode. Seriously, so much better than just waiting I don't know why more people haven't figured it out yet.

Just play as Ryu/Ken when you're starting out. Very easy to play, quite powerful, you can move onto a more advanced character when you get better at the game and they have flashy moves. Seriously, the Ken/Ryu hate is pretty bad seeing as they've always been the most popular Street Fighter characters.

I played as Ryu when I was unlocking all the characters and he's not fun.  I tried Ken and all the other clones (I had to to unlock Seth) and they aren't fun either.  Why would I play a character that isn't fun?
