Forums - Microsoft - JRPG OR should it be called ARPG?

I've been thinking why isn't Fable 2 called a English RPG because Final Fantasy is called a japaneese RPG. Do the Japaneese think they are better than the westerners? Is that why it is called a Western RPG and not United states RPG or English RPG? I am proposing we call JRPG' Asian RPGs for now on ok?

No. Fable is a BRPG (Boring RPG)

Ok, I'm just going to throw some things out there.

Japanese people did not create these labels. Notice how the labels are using English characters - A-Z. Note how Japanese people use entirely different characters.

Clearly, these labels were created by English speakers, not the Japanese.

Not only that the terms are absolutely stupid.

I mean what if a company based out of lansing michigan makes an RPG just like Final Fantasy 12.

Either you call it a WRPG and the definitions mean nothing but country which is stupid.

Or you call it a JRPG which might actually be more stupid.

Fable 2 was made by a European company...

American RPG and Europe RPG just sound stupid. It's best to categorize them as Western since many are similar while Japanese usually have a different style to them.

so when china comes out with an rpg one of these days will it be called a eastern rpg, i think not!!!!

If it is similar to WRPGS, it ill be called a WRPG

If it is similar to JRPGs, it ill be called a JRPG

If it is something new entirely, it will be considered a game that is of no one particular genre

If that last one happens, and then many Chinese devs start making similar games, then we need a new label

@Kasz: I think of the Another Code games as western-style point&click adventures, so a game from a western developer similar to FF or any other famous Japanese RPG IP could be called a Japanese-style RPG.

have there ever been any Asian rpgs not from Japan?

Terms such as these often grow or adapt to changes in an industry. B-movie for example was originally for second half of double feature movies but even though double features are pretty much extinct the term lives on meaning low budget movies. The same will probably happen with the JRPG WRPG terms. As long as the stylistic lines remain it is just too useful for people to be able to ask, "Is this a JRPG." As long as they feel comfortable that it convey's information on whether they will like the game, if that distinction is important to you, or not I expect it to remain. If the term loses meaning it will go away as either new terms for distinctions in the genre become more important or the genre becomes to homogenous or heterogenous for people to recognize a distinction between those groups of RPGs.

There have certainly been Japanese "style" RPGs from Western developers... Secret of Evermore? Penny Arcade Adventures? Black Sigil? Others?

Something?
