I was just discussing with my co-worker one of my prophecies where I believe, as has been talked about in cultural themes before, especially in Japan, where there will be a time coming where Humans will essentially be obsolete.  I noted that during the Feudal - Modern era Peasentry and Slavery was the main workforce and the industrial revolution changd that forever.  Now with Computers machines can do more things than just "grunt work" they can react, send automated messages, calculate and many other applications which will only get better and more full proof in time.  Android/Robotic improvements can also make humans become much more of a liability given that we are not immune to sickness and emotional stress.

I say that if there aren't concious decisions made to curb progress of tthese technologies as part of the workforce we could see our own demise at some point.

Well Skynet was the name of the AI that became sentient in Terminator

And the cost thing, when you program an AI, you associate a cost with each action, and the computer scans all possible choices it could make and chooses the one that has the lowest cost.

So this is a method of making sure your AI never decides to become sentient and kill everybody
