I believe it was attempted at one point, i think, to DDoS attack the DNS Root Servers, the servers that apparently bind hte internet together. I forget the details, but it would certainly be possible to destroy the internet on a variety of levels through a dedicated attack. The problem is that if it were grand enough, you would probably be tried by the World Court or something if caught
