Forums - General - Is It Just Me Or Do Cartoons Suck These Days

One of the only cartoons that's actually more enjoyable as an adult than as a kid is Johnny Bravo (for obvious reasons). I'd agree that a lot of cartoons these days are stupid but it's not like most cartoons were comic genius in the first place. We can't expect all cartoons to be like Ren & Stimpy or Pinky and the Brain, but it would sure be nice if it at least one modern cartoon had that genius.

I see the nostalgia goggles are in full effect here. Seriously, all of those cartoons you posted are terrible. By any way in which you can judge the quality of the medium they are bad. The animation is awful and inconsistent, the characters are flat and 2-Dimensional and the plots never made any sense. But then that's exactly how childrens cartoons are supposed to be. The formula was in effect then and is still used now. You're just being overly cynical because your not a child anymore and newer shows don't have any relevence to you so you see them for what they really are...mindless and without logic. You just don't pick up on it with the older shows because of the 'OMG I remember that!' reflex. So yes...it's just you, the vast majority of cartoons have always sucked.

Explain how there terrible? Those were some great cartoons that I can actually sit down today and still watch. I mean have you ever watched Pirates Of Dark Water? That was a great show and the plot of the cartoon itself was pretty good, like a video game almost, the whole plot of the show was about recovering the 13 treasures of rule to save the world from the dark water (unfortunately the show only ran 21 episodes but still).

As for animation, most of the cartoons today are identical to each other, there's no difference almost. Yah the animation from the cartoons of the late 80's and early 90's wasn't as sharp as it is now but each cartoon was unique and different (like the ones I posted).

" Rebellion Against Tyrants Is Obedience To God"

I guarantee you that if you were to take off the rose-colored glasses, the cartoons you watched as a kid were shit, too.

Popular television animation hasn't been worth a damn since the early 70s when Disney and Warner were still doing everything in the US by hand. Even then, Hannah Barbara was still pumping out crap so not everything was quality.

Eh, quite a few are still awesome today.  Talespin did a great job of standing the test of time for example.

Not all of them are crap, just the vast majority. In the 90s, Talespin and Animaniacs were prime examples of quality cartoons. Batman was pretty decent too, though it pales in comparison to the old 40s-50s Superman cartoons.

In the 80s, we had Danger Mouse and several other Brit cartoons that were pretty damned good.
