I put off using GFWL for a long time. First I put it off because it cost money (which is quite stupid, I mean I played Doom 2 online for free over a decade ago and have taken free online play for granted ever since) and then later because it seemed kinda pointless.
I found out after being more or less forced to install it with Dawn of War 2 that it's a lot better then I thought, and makes the switch from 360 to gaming PC WAY easier.
The main thing that makes it awesome is that Games for Windows Live doesn't care whether you get your game for PC or 360, it counts both the same. That means shared gamerscore and achievements for both. If I want to play Fallout 3 through again with GFWL enabled this time, it will count the same as if I had played it on 360, which is great. It's also nice to carry over the 11k or so live points I have from my stint where I used to play the 360 (primarily before the PS3+fable 2).
The second good thing is pretty easy matchmaking. You make a public game, send a invite to game request to whoever is on your friends list and poof, they're in the match. Its pretty seamless really.
It also saves you from the god awful private server fiasco that is steam. There is nothing I hate more then using private Left 4 Dead servers with their endless quirks; one minute you're playing a game, the next second the game decides to put you in a vs match, reset the level, and ruin your day in general.
So yah, for anyone who wants to play games with much better graphics and controls (ESPECIALLY RTS and FPS games that benefit heavily from the mouse and keyboard) it seems like you can ditch the 360 and carry over your score/profile/friends ect. That the MS people who came up with the new GFWL all ended up canned is a shame now that I know their work was really pretty good.
