Yea don't think you can YET though. :( I was looking to find out about this exact thing when they first announced the custom support in games, It does have to be on the Hard drive, i dont know about USB hard drives - if they work that way.

yep yep, just wanted to make sure a media server would work, turns out no, so i have to transfer some more stuff onto my ps3. *brings out flash drive*

Did you know you can Transfer via media server just by hitting triangle and hitting 'copy'. And actually when i use tversity to transfer, it usually transfers over a pic to go with it. No need to use a flash drive.
