Forums - General - Obama Approves Small Troop Increase in Afghanistan

Call me crazy, but this seems pretty conveniently timed politically.  Although there is evidence Obama has been considering this ever since he entered office, and here, not to mention he talked about it a lot during the campaign.

Regardless, the political implications of this are good for Obama.  It will allow him to regain the headlines and this is a decision that Republicans will be unable to criticize or else they will seem "soft" on national defense.  Its already made some Democrats upset, which in a lot of ways is good for Obama as it helps him with the "middle" of the electorate.

All in all a smart move that should contain the situation that has grown much worse in Afghanistan.

Defense officials say Obama approves several thousand new troops for Afghanistan War

WASHINGTON - Defense and congressional officials say President Barack Obama has approved an increase in U.S. forces for the flagging war in Afghanistan. The Obama administration is expected to announce on Tuesday or Wednesday that it will send one additional Army brigade and an unknown number of Marines to Afghanistan this spring. One official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the total is about 17,000 troops.

That would be the first installment on a larger influx of U.S. forces that have been widely expected this year. It would get a few thousand troops in place in time for the increase in fighting that usually comes with warmer weather and ahead of national elections this summer.

I'm mainly concerned with the fact that I'm working to join the Air Force, and an increase in demand means an increase in chances for me to get in without being delayed entry. I'd like to not wait until August to start basic, although it appears that is what I will be doing.

I'm as interested to see how Republicans respond as I am in this news itself.

I'm not claiming that I 100% support this, but he was pretty clear during the campaign that he would put more emphasis on Afghanistan, including sending more troops there.

Smart move. Afghanistan has gone to shit in the past two years while everyone focused on Iraq.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

One of my friends has been shitting bricks about this for the past few months. Looks like he will most likely get shipped over sees as he has been in the reserves for at least 5 years but hasn't been shipped anywhere.

Obama approves Afghanistan troop increase

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Barack Obama has approved a significant troop increase for Afghanistan, Pentagon officials told CNN Tuesday.

Pentagon officials said Tuesday that President Obama will increase troops in Afghanistan.

The new troop deployment is expected to include 8,000 Marines headquartered from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as well as 4,000 additional Army troops from Fort Lewis, Washington.

"This increase is necessary to stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, which has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires," Obama said in a written statement.

"The Taliban is resurgent in Afghanistan, and al Qaeda supports the insurgency and threatens America from its safe-haven along the Pakistani border."

Obama added that the troop increase in Afghanistan would be made possible in part by the impending troop drawdown in Iraq.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said the original mission in Afghanistan was "too broad" and needs to be more "realistic and focused" for the United States to succeed.

"If we set ourselves the objective of creating some sort of central Asian Valhalla over there, we will lose, because nobody in the world has that kind of time, patience and money," Gates said during a recent Senate hearing.

About 38,000 U.S. troops are currently serving in Afghanistan
