Forums - General - Palin's Daughter Says Abstinence Not Realistic

I'm in a research seminar on HIV in Africa and I've had the pleasure of seeing what a fantastic failure abstinence only programs have been. They don't work -period. In fact the government released the five year study showing that abstinence only programs did not change sexual behavior. Well I got to go tend to my kids: Skoal, Snap-On, and Keystone. Later.

It's better than Kal-El Cage.

What is it about celebrities giving their children bullshit names? We're going to grow up watching a second generation of celebrities with freaky dog names like Kal-El and Apple. The weirdest part is that I don't get where it comes from. Most of the celebrities doing it all have popular names like Nick, Chris, Gwen and they choose those names of all things. I wonder if they name their pets after humans instead.

Nick Cage changed his name to Nick Cage because he really liked this guy...

Nick Cage is just a loony comic book geek.

Wonderful role model, ain't she?

Obviously.

Except for me, I'm the abstinence king, motherfucker!! Bow before me!!

Wait I'm not supposed to proud of that, am I?

wat is she talking about i have never had sex and im getting married next month so yeah

^ same here

I'm abstinent and yet I don't see anything wrong with it either. The problem isn't that abstinence is not realistic at all...the problem is that abstinence is getting harder and harder in this culture of sexuality.

The only reason I have been abstinent for this long is the fact that I decided not to associate with the Western culture.

Is it wrong to not practice abstinence? Depends on you...for me I believe I should practice abstinence for my benefit.

Explanation of sig:

I am a Pakistani.....my name is Dan....how hard is that? (Don't ask about the 101...apparantely there are more of me out there....)

We're not saying the practice of abstinence is stupid or impossible. But abstinence-only education doesn't get anybody else to abstain. The number of people who have sex before marriage does not decrease when they are taught about abstinence.

The problem is the idea that kids should ONLY be taught about abstinence, and NOT about condoms, because that knowledge will somehow hurt them or confuse them or turn them into sex maniacs. That idea doesn't help anybody, but wastes tons of money every year.

The only reason the argument is still around is because one side studies the facts and says "this education does not work" and the other side says "oh yeah but condoms are gay!"

 Western Culture doesn't promote abstinence?

I would argue the exact opposite of this. Many other cultures "worship" (not literally) fertility. In fact it is basically a duty to have many children. Being barren is the worst possible outcome in life.

Of course many of these cultures also want people to be married at a young age and thus have children.

In the Case of the United States I think that Abstinence primarily doesn't work for most because Marriage age has been pushed back a lot in the 20th and 21st centuries and we are still trying to deal with this taboo.

A lot of people remain abstient - they do everywhere - even though they don't swear to a particular faith. Some people just have lower libidos. There are people within cultures that just don't have sex.

I'm intrigued by the morality in sex.

Pakidan - Why did you choose "sex" to rebel against. Why not capitalism, fast food, "western clothing" etc. Just curious.

What is "Teaching abstinance" anyway.

We never really had that... I mean... we had sex education at like... 5th-6th grade... what with the condoms and such.

I mean... is it just people saying "You can not do this".

Cause I'd think that would be self apparent.

Is "Teaching abstinance" really just "teaching all the bad stuff about sex"?
