Personally I'm psyched for it. I think this is something hard to screw up. Even if it doesn't end up being as brilliant as the novel (and it won't), or even coming close, it will still be a kick ass movie.

For length they already said they took out the sort of meta-plot with the pirate in comic book the kid reads, but will be in the directors cut released on disc later (so I hear). And honestly I think they can fit most of it into a movie taking that out. Due to the nature of the graphic novel medium alot of space and time can be taken up having a small conversation or doing a few simple actions that may be a couple pages in the book, but thirty seconds in the movie. Some trimming would be necessary of course, but I don't think they would have to bastardize much of it to make it fit.

It's already got a hell of a script if the actors just sit and recite the comic book, and the visuals will obviously be stunning. So even though I know it won't be as good as the book, I'm still very psyched for seeing it.

IN YOUR DARKEST HOUR!!!

Cutting out the pirate segments is the smart move. Not only will it transition questionably to film but it also gives the director much more ability to fit as much of the 1986 story into the film as possible.

I agree. the pirate part was a great parallel in the book and provides plenty of fodder for discussion, but it's also the most superflous part that isn't directly related to the events of the film/book. Nobody in the audience will be left confused because of the lack of demon pirates.

I'm in the same boat where it most likely will not live up to the book completely but will still be a great film to watch. I'll be going opening weekend. You VGC people want me to hold you some seats?

I just recently read the graphic novel (was in my college bookstore) and like most people who are fans of a book, I'm a little bit cautious about the movie. I guess going into the movie knowing it won't be as good as the novel might help.

Also, I think it is a good idea to take out the pirate section. Though it gave a great example of foreshadowing and showing how the events taking place in another light, it would be too confusing for the audience (it would be seen as having a direct effect of the main plot and not a side plot).

I'm just psyched to see how well it will transition into the twenty-first century audience. Hopefully the movie goes well.

Do you think two - two and a half hours would do the novel justice? Or is it too much?

It's really hard to say. If they do it anime style, they'll need approximately 6-8 hours because each panel will have to be painstakingly recreated and enacted in the same fashion it was originally done in. This is why anime sucks IMO, and why you get seemingly 5 minutes of television presented in 20 minutes. If they adapt it properly, then they should be able to make a movie version of the comic in an acceptable 2-2 1/2 hour range.

A lot of the problems I foresee is in the structure of the original graphic novel, I don't think its going to be an easy transition over to film.

As-long as the spirit of the novel is well understood and portrayed the movie should be great. It wont be as good as the graphic novel but thats what happens when you transfer from any one artistic medium to another.

when is it out?
