Forums - Sony - Killzowned Engine to bring in more PS3 Exclusives!

O btw:

topic question was: I’m not sure if you are able to disclose this but will KZ2’s deferred rendering engine be available (leased) to other ps3 dev’s, 1st party or otherwise?

"I'm sure we would be willing to share tech with other first party developers, but it is not a matter of throwing our engine over the fence and wishing them luck with it. Our engine is built specifically for Killzone 2 and our tools-sets and not really set up for middleware and we would not have the resources to fully support other teams with it. Short answer, no."

It's baffling how you can shut down this thread with your post and yet get completely ignored. Is there anyone that still wants to take that B.S. blog post in the OP to heart? Why is it you all take random blog posts from the middle of nowhere on the internet and consider them articles with some standing? There isn't one quote in there from a Killzone 2 developer. It's all empty speculation, and speculation that was shot at and subsequently curb stomped by what NiKKoM found on the KZ2 forums.

hey everyone i have a plan.. lets completely ignore the opening topic and turn this into a idiotic flame war about the nonexistant superiority of the one console us marketing drones own.. ow my bad.. you already did

I hope they included colour in that engine

"Killzone 2 has been in development for around four years now and is without a doubt the best looking game to date."

I doubt that, I doubt it a lot. It could be because I've played Crysis

I guess we'll see?? Seems like the only people likely to use the "Killzowned" engine, are high budget developers that don't already have reliable engines to use. That rules out EA and pretty much all the multi-plat titles obviously. I imagine if a developer really wanted to make a great looking game, without spending a fortune, they will likely go the route of the Unreal Engine given it is also a graphical power house, is much more commonly used, costs less, and will be available for multiplat titles.

If they want to make the engine proprietary to the PS3, there will not be many developers using it at all. The money is with multi-platform titles and the Wii/360 right now when it comes to software. Developers that are not first party to Sony would be foolish to use this engine and shut off the larger selling markets.

The unreal engine is Fucking Expensive. Nuff said. I've looked around at stuff like that.

Thats all nice, good and lovely. I have a fetish for A,B,C etc.

A. Why would a developer use an engine that excludes the biggest market for shooters?

B. Are there any developers whom you would actually care about available to use this engine?
C. Why would a developer looking for an engine look past UE3, Cry-engine, Source engine etc which are multi-platform to use this one?
D. Any new development starting now wouldn't be seen again until mid/late 2011 at earliest and the PS3s sales are slowing so its a big risk for any developer to make.

Just because it's made for a shooter doesn't mean you can't build other genres on it :p

C'mon guys lets be real here you don't have to fight tooth and nail whenever us PS3 owners try to say some positive things about our console or make some cool or fun predictions about what might be done with it (im looking at you squilliam and nightsurge).

If you own all the consoles (or use to own all the consoles in my case, now I roll straight PS3) then you should know the PS3 is by far the most quality console on the market. It's a pleasure to just turn my PS3 and dabble around with all my photos on my 250 gig hdd as it sits there silently begging me to play it, or playing music on it with the awesome Earth visualizer !! Sony's console has the best games in the industry IMO right now, but if you don't agree right now, then certainly in due time i think we can all agree they will. Sony has the best 1st party game developers in the world. The 360 was a great console to own the past few years but its all PS3 from here on out.

Oh, and play Warhawk a lot :). I find it to be one of the most unique and fun experiences I have had with a game in a looooong time.

I don't think most people agree with you actually.

I do agree with vthokiesrmoo

Hey Squilliam, you and me must be pretty cool cats to be grouped as like some 360 fanboy team.  Funny how we both are multi-console owners, and seem to have a more objective view on things rather than just believe blind speculation every time someone posts it.

Thankfully you are not most people.  All those 74.7 million people who bought a 360 or a Wii instead sure seem to disagree with him.  And just like him, I owned all 3 consoles, then sold the Wii.  I still have a PS3 and a 360, but the PS3 only gets used to watch Blu-Rays.  I haven't owned a single game for it and have just rented a few here and there.  To say the games are better is just solely an opinion.  Even counting future releases it is just a matter of opinion, with my opinion being that the 360 has better games now and for years to come.  Warhawk is lame, btw.  You should check out a little game called Crimson Skies that was on the original Xbox.  It was way better in my opinion.  Warhawk added a little bit of ground battle to the equation, but it just plain sucks.  The 360 was a great console to own the past few years, and is still going to be from here on out. If anyone is question of continuing to be a valid player, it's the PS3.

@Staude, see Onyx and NiKKom's post up above, please.  Kthanxbye.

And sure the Unreal Engine is expensive from a single person's standpoint, but not from the developer standpoint.

I never said all people. I said most people. Otherwise we would have high software sales for the ps3 (ie more than one game in the top 30 npd) and higher hardware sales.

On topic: Nice find Cloud, introducing a new programming format to the industry can be viewed as nothing but a win. I only hope it does (not) remain exclusive, mainly because I would love to see what the format can do on different consoles with a little more money backing it up.

Your joking right. I think your name says it all in regards to my posts. What I will say now though is that apparently Neilson did a survey that supports my "claim".

"Nielsen is up to their old rating shenanigans once more, recording console usage data from last year in October through the month of December. Nintendo Wii has done a fantastic job in the market, and Nielsen states that they've captivated the 6-11 age range for males and the 25-34 gap for women. The Wii also fairs better with women over 35 in comparison to other consoles on the market. Female gamers cite Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Wii Fit as their favorite titles to play.

As for Microsoft, the Xbox 360 attracts males aged 12-17 and females aged 25-34, which is similar to the Wii. However, the PlayStation 3 demonstrated the highest average age for male usage at 18-24, which Nielsen believes is due to teenagers who had previously purchased the PSX and PS2 that "may have 'graduated' to the PS3 in their assumed adulthood." As for females? Sony also pulls in the 18-24 average age group as well.

When it comes down to actual console usage, however, Microsoft ends up quite unbalanced according to the data. Nielsen reports that males use the consoles almost twice as much as female gamers, while Nintendo and Sony have a more even console playing field. It's also worth noting that the Wii sees less average playing time altogether than both Sony and Microsoft's systems."
