Forums - Microsoft - Is this a legitimate video bashing Halo 3?

Most of his points are valid. The storyline of Halo 3 is quite weak and the game itself is quite unrealistic. Realism and narrative are perhaps the two most important aspects of a next generation video game (so please don't start naming decade old or wii games), and a game lacking a great story or a sense of realism is leaving a lot to be desired. I wouldn't say the game sucks, but those two elements do leave a gaping hole in what is the most hyped game in history.

If you mean by "realism" as in a credibly laid out world that makes sense in its own logic, then yes "realism" is good.  If "realism" means "anchored to out world", which is what he in this venting, then that is so wrong.  Thinking like that is like when we see Gran Turismo vs Forza argued over realism, with both players are driving the car with joypads.  It is delusions of superiority arguing over faux realism.  And realism is overrated anyhow.  Sony Home has a realistic simulation of a bowling alley.  Yes, you can wait in line behind someone to play a videogame or bowl.  Let me know how "realism" here is fun.

In the case of Halo, it is you fighting aliens off in a power suit that enables you to do absurd things.  But, the debate is whether it fits the Halo universe.  I would say it does.  Others might not.  I would NOT expect a game which has The Flood, and the answer to the Flood is killing all life besides the Flood so the Flood starves, so to be high on realism IN THIS UNIVERSE.

Ask me about Halo, and I will say: The graphics do the job, but are not a high point.  The Halo 3 thing closed up things, but wasn't great.  The final boss in Halo 3 is lame.   And considering the number of mods that have been developed for it, it has shown to have legs in the console FPS arena.

The storyline in Halo 3 wasn't weak, however it definately wasn't told as well as the first two, and left room for drastic improvement.

As for realism? So only WWII shooters are relevant? Because right now if realism is key, you're discounting the following from having one of the most important aspects of a next gen video game:

All Sci-Fi games

All Fantasy Games

Everything made by/for Nintendo Wii.

All sports games that allow you to make a custom character of greater than possible human abilities.

etc.

For a sci-fi shooter, I'd say the realism wasn't bad.
