Forums - Sony - editorial: "april 09 ps3 price cut almost guarenteed".

The numbers made it clear that the PlayStation 3 was the main bread winner for the games division, by selling the most hardware and software. Now, if the company has been able to reduce the manufacturing cost of the PS3 so far that they're now making a slight profit on every console sold, then there's even more room to breath.

Wow. Anyone who drew THAT conclusion from Sony's Q3 financials needs to turn in their journalist badge. Because selling the most hardware obviously means that the PS3 is profitable, right?

more ps3's sold then more ps3 owners then higher software sales. losing money on hardware is irrelevant

You'd make a great Sony executive.

That would be true... The problem is that the PS3 is in such small demand that they need to keep cutting prices to make it competitive. People are already asking for another price cut when PS3 isn't even making a profit. They're always one step behind.

Well, fancy that! We know this, the only people that don't are the Sony fanboys who are in some kind of denial and don't understand the basics of the console market - Since a long while consoles have always been loss leaders.

Only in the last two generations have the winners been loss leaders. The "razors and blades" strategy only works when the market is a battle of resources, ie. the consoles all have mostly the same values. But two generations does not make it the standard.

i would like for there to be a price cut in april but i wouldn't be surprised if it didnt happen at least WW maybe just for EU it will happen in april

I wouldn't hold my breath.

If anywhere, Japan would be the place to see a pricecut first due to the Yen-Yen exchange rate being 1:1.

That said, seeing how the sales of consoles are this gen there (i.e. pretty appaling), I would think the next best place for a pricecut would be in the EU.

I wouldn't expect a pricecut in the US at all, at least until the exchange rate improves for them.

I do expect to see more and better bundles in both the EU and US though, with an end fiscal 2009 cut in EU and followed in about two months in the US. This will be about 6 months after a Japan cut (timed around FFXIII and possibly GT5 in Japan).

As for the article in the OP, I normally admire people with dreams, like Martin Luther King jr. for example. This however, would just be a nightmare.
