Forums - Microsoft - Expect big numbers for Bioshock - MGC Leaderboard Tracker

Hello everyone. Incase you didn't know, once in awhile, I check the numbers out at MGC to see how they correlate with various numbers.

www.mygamercard.net tracks actual legitimate Xbox 360 user's Xbox Live Gamertags on a solid near-real-time base. It catalogues the top-played games for the Xbox 360.

Lets go over the list to show how huge BioShock is doing in the United States:

Rank Name Week GT Ct. LTD GT Ct.
 #1 Gears of War 32,713 623,911
 #2 Madden 2008 21,999 78,991
 #3 BioShock 17,087 18,760
 #4 Rainbow Six Vegas 15,503 314,574
 #5 Guitar Hero 2 14,290 220,854

Now, for those wondering "how is #3 so big"? Well, the fact is, I haven't seen a single game since MGC started, sans Gears of War, get up the chart that quickly. Expecially for a single player-only game. In about 32hrs, Bioshock already has charted, which is ungodly. Forza Motorsports 2, for example, took about 7 days to chart anywhere near the top 5 in the US. Likewise, Madden 2008 isn't much higher on the list.

So how much should Bioshock do? It's entirely uncertain, because the information can vary. Lost Planet, for example, failed to chart very high (maybe #3 for it's first week), but sold 200,000+ units first week. Nevertheless, for a Single Player game, this is ungodly numbers. In my unscientific opinion, Bioshock should do a minimum of 200,000 units first week in the US + Canada. However, if numbers prove true, it has a good shot at 300,000-350,000 for the first week.

I think your definitely on the right track with your conjecture. The game was already quite buzz worthy. However the early release, and the positive word of mouth is bound to drive sales through the roof. I have spent eight hours on the game so far, and I have to basically force myself to stop playing after a few hours.

Need to download PC demo and hope that it doesn't make my PC explode like the guy on neogaf ;)

To cash in my CC rewards points for $300 in Circuit City gift cards to purchase a 360 or not: That is the question.

Im thinking about 250k first week.

I'd say 250k is a safe bet (in the way it's not too high or too low either way).

Nevertheless, 250k is rather good for a game that many have pegged being far lower for opening week. But we'll have to see.

got my copy yesterday :)

Mines pre-ordered and i can pick it up tomorrow. Im in Australia and tomorrow is meant to be the official release date! Thats weird cause its normally a Thursday, but ive seen loads of shops breaching the release date and selling copies. I almost spent $AU90 on ANOTHER copy so i could have it a day early, then i found it available for rent and almost did that instead. Oh well, ill know how great it is tomorrow

i bet 400k first week...i see a huge hype around it

2008 year end sales (made in January 2008):

44.2 M 27.1 M 20.8 M

I think there is massive hype, especially as there was a point when ppl were saying this game didn't have nearly enough recognition to be a hit. That said, i think 400,000 is excessive, it is unrealistic to expect anything more than a third of madden's first week at the absolute outside i think. But as i said, anything over about 120000 should be considered a success, especially given this games potential for word-of-mouth driven long legs

400k would be excessive, but is possible. Crackdown, Guitar Hero 2, and NCAA FB 2008 all did above 300k first week. So 400k is possible, but would be "excessive". Nevertheless, the forums and stats are pretty staggering for Bioshock.

I'll update the MGC number soon. As of 8am EST, BioShock is now at 24,000+ tags for the week...A very good improvement in just under a day.
