Forums - Sony - How well is Killzone 2 overshadowing Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter 4?

Well, for me, it goes SF IV > KZ2 >>> RE 5 in terms of hype level (and want). I mean, I want KZ2 so bad, but I don't have a countdown for it like I do with SF IV :).

Are you serious about SF4 Nyanks? SF4 is not niche, if you watch what Capcom has done compared to previous SF you'll see niche is the last thing Capcom has in mind.

SF4 will bring in more new players to fighting games than any fighting game before besides Street Fighter 2. The graphics in SF4 are pulling in a lot of people, they're colorful, the characters have too much muscle, and it's the flashiest street fighter by far. Compared to previous SF the amount of effort into wowing and woohing new gamers is significant.

Also the cast of characters, a lot less of new characters like SF 3rd Strike and a lot more of characters that they knew players would want instead. Gouken, Sakura, Balrog etc, why are Alpha characters going to a main Street Fighter series game? The gameplay mechanic has always been stressed as Capcom wants a game easy to pick up and play, yet difficult to master.

Take a look at prices for their arcade sticks, the mere fact that they have the balls and gall to sell a 150 dollar champion arcade stick and the fact that it sells and gets sold out is ridiculous. NO ARCADE STICK in the history of fighting games until now HAS EVER HIT that price point. When fighting games were bigger the most expensive arcade stick cost around 70-80 dollars. You can easily build your own stick for around 40 dollars and some soldering skill. A 150 dollar stick is just plain ridiculous and I doubt it could be better than the one I'll be making.

They even had a podcast, a group of fighting game champs sit down and train a fighter in SF4, SF4 is big. Personally I don't even like the game and won't be picking it up. Still believe SF4 is niche? It'll be the biggest thing to happen in fighting games for a while and I can easily bet you that SF4 can keep up with KZ2 sales.

for ps3 consoles it may be overshadowing those games...however on the xbox its a different story. If resident evil 5 sells 2X as much on 360, im sure capcom will remember this in the future.

Also, FEAR 2 may lag in sales on PS3...but thats fine as it will make up lost sales on pc and 360 who don't have a big FPS game to play this month.

SF4 has nothing to do with killzone 2 and it should sell well no matter what killzone 2 does sales wise.

Anyone know how to do one of those google analytics graphs? Showing the search hits of "Killzone 2", "Street Fighter 4", and "Resident Evil 5"??

It won't, not on a WW basis.

First, the thing with the arcade sticks actually favors my argument.  What kind of casual player will pay $150 for a f**kin arcade stick.  Capcom is is aiming for the harcore audience of SF that go all the way back.

Let's get this straight.  People call MGS series niche.  MGS4 has sold like 4 million copies.  I'm not saying it has bad sales, I'm saying these games tend to have sales caps, there isn't much room to expand.  If they prove otherwise with SF4 sales, I'll concede.

And I can guarantee you SF4 won't bring in a ridiculous amount of new fighting game converts.  I just don't think it can do it, hopefully I'll be proven wrong.

I don't think it's overshadowing RE5. That game is getting quite a bit of attention now that the demos are out.

@Nyanks but Capcom is not aiming for the hardcore audience or they never would have had the Mugen creator work on SF4. It actually makes more sense to me that a casual fighter hardcore gamer would shell out 150 for the stick, since they lack the knowledge on the price to build their own and benefits.

I understand your comparison to MGS, but if you look at Capcom's efforts on SF4 they are trying hard to reach new audiences with this game and pull in old players still stuck on CvS2 or 3rd Strike or whatever fighting game they're playing. SF4 is big, I've never seen this amount of hype for a fighting game besides Super Smash. My friend OmegaBlue frequently goes to SF State to play SF4. He says the amount of new players getting into this game is incredible.

I actually hope you'll be proven right Nyanks, I do not enjoy SF4 personally. If this game gets big it would suck if fighting games in the future use SF4 ideas because I downright do not like this game.

Right now it seems like RE5 is leading the way. While the reviews for KillZone2 were very good, they reviewers also seem tempered and are trying to let fans know this game is good but it's not going to blow anyone away.

For PS3 owners KZ2 hype should be very high though it should keep them busy for a very long time.

Yeah, we can have our opinions and just wait until the results are in.  I thought you were gonna go crazy on me for a second.  Thanks for giving an unbiased argument!  Hard to find here sometimes lol.
