Forums - Sony - Ah my PS3 crapped out on me!

It won't read discs anymore. I can't hear the discs spin so it's not even trying. Sony should extend its warranty. Now they want me to pay 150 to repair it...It's a 60gb launch console. Any ideas?

what?  Cuz one console craps out?  Give me a break..especially if it's a 60 gig launch console, it's worth paying to fix it.

Don't get me wrong, it sucks that it happened to you.  If it happened to me, as I also have a 60 gig launch, I'd be upset also, and I probably wouldn't be able to afford the $150 to fix it right away.  But I'd save up the money and do it, my 60 gig is extremely valuable to me based on what it offers compared to what other models offer.

Its funny you mention they should extend the warrenty - my launch model crapped out (Yellow light) about 2 weeks after the warrenty expired, but they had extended the warrenty for about a month because of that exact problem, so it got fixed for free.

Seeing as how my 360 broke right after they announced the RROD warrenty, but I still had to pay because it wasn't a RROD issue (well it was, but they fixed that problem over the phone), I came away with a much better impression of Sony's service than MS, though from a very small sample size (1).

1% failure rate... I think its your fault, you probably stuck your fingers in the slot!

Im sorry to hear about it, just try to avoid folding at home if you want to make sure you don't have a 2nd failure.

P.S they have quietly extended the warranty on the 60gb models, call up and you may be surprised. We 60gb owners are sexy and Sony loves us more than the non BC owners.

How long have they extended the warranty? OMG I hope it's still up.

This happened to my nephews 40gig model. I called around and no one at all can repair or replace except Sony. It is the blue-ray drive and only Sony has the drives used in the PS3 and refuse to wholesale them out.

On the bright side, Sony offers a free shipping option for this repair though.

Not true...

You can try to change it yourself, if there is no warranty anymore, you have nothing to lose.

Thanks for the info, If it happens to my nephew gain, or to myself, I now have a cheaper way out.

I looked and looked for these, guess I was just not looking hard enough.

I think its two years, they fixed my 60gb PS3 outside of the year warranty for free.

Called them and they said they only extended it only 30 days after the initial year warranty. I think I'll TRY to fix it myself since the warranty is done with anyway.

Sony can't afford 1 billion dollars of RROD repair.

Sony doesn't have to pay a $1B RROD repair bill. Even if this was a major problem, it probably costs significantly less to replace the drive motor than it does to replace the motherboard and add heatsinks.

well, what i said wasn't anything serious, since 60 and 20 GB were limited models that didn't sell like hot cakes before it was replaced by the more popular 40GB model, even if Sony gave a new PS3 to every 60/20GB owners, it wouldn't cost them 1b$

Ouch man that sucks.

My friends PS3 crapped out on him too and he bought a 160 gig while under his warranty. He sends his 80gig in and Sony ships it for free, fixed with a copy of CoD4 also for free. I guess there is such a thing as businesses being generous.

haha this is funny since my ps3 just crapped out on me also and i just sent it out today for repair but not to sony i sent it to a company called video game repair 911 since my ps3 isnt under warranty. my ps3 kept freezing within seconds of turning it on and im not to sure what would cause this does anyone know what might cause this problem?
