Forums - Gaming - Reeves: Videogame industry is about survival of the professional, not cutting prices and destroying the market

Lol the whole interview is a goldmine. Check these bits out:

Now, going into the remaining rounds and the next seven years, we are going to be very strong. The last few weeks have shown we are clearly number two in the market. I'm as confident as I was before.

Eurogamer: Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai was recently quoted as saying the Xbox 360 "lacks longevity". Do you agree?

David Reeves: I'm not going to comment on that. I simply don't know what their plans are. I'm not going to be as arrogant as to comment on either Nintendo or Xbox 360.

Eurogamer: Do you think what Kaz Hirai said was arrogant?

David Reeves: I don't think so. He was probably misquoted, because I don't think Kaz would say that.

In the videogames industry, we've all been winners for the last two years.

David Reeves: Between 13th December and 13th January, there were over one million dollars' worth of micro-transactions in Home. So don't forget, it's a commercial venture as well.

now it makes sense... Kaz was "misquoted"

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

im preety sure hes talking about game developers cutting the prices of games and not about microsoft cutting there prices .

^i feel so bad for doubting him now

Developers are not responsible for setting prices AFAIK, publishers and retailers are. When they do reduce prices, it's mostly because the games are not selling so that hardly counts as "destroying the industry".

LOL. this guy is an even bigger idiot that Aaron Green-something from MS...

Sony got where they are in the videogame industry by "destroying" the market and cutting prices on their competitors at a loss. They certanly weren't "professionals" back then and are still a bunch of clowns with guys like this around.

F**k him!

Mind you I would say it is pretty close.

Still it should be good fun hearing greenbergs response later I would say he is choking on his lunch.

Happy days.

MS still has an ace in its sleeve, which beats them all. ;)

Hint: Developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers....

The more insane or petty the public relations sounds is in direct correlation to how desperate the situation happens to be at a given time. The first year Sony was home of the incredibly insane comments. Last year not so much. This year right back to bat shit crazy. The only thing that is relevant about these comments is the insight it gives us into the morale at Sony. Which is obviously at low ebb right now.

For all the comments over the past few days of under tracking on this site. These comments are reminiscent of the first six months of the console. When a serious back log was consuming massive chunks of the Sony's liquidity. The talk gets more intense the worse things look. Unfortunately I do not see slashing prices as a viable option this year. So it should be interesting to see whether we see concession or a full breakdown. I vote for the latter. Sony seems to have no means of extrication. They cannot even maintain price point, because at their current price they have to be exhausting their potential market.

Seriously hairy shit is coming, but for the PS3 owners I predict some software may see serious price cuts, as Sony tries anything to regain liquidity.

I visibly cringed when i read "we are 2.5 years into a 10 year cycle."

I understand that that comment is misunderstood, but it sure doesn't help their credibility for him to bandy it about like that.

Otherwise: Sony is just getting a taste of their own medicine, between Microsoft who can outweigh them financially, and Nintendo who outweighs them in sales. Using the tactics between the two of them that Sony used in the past: bully the competition with your huge revenue stream, and slowly leach exclusives away by making a more appealing platform through higher userbase
