Forums - Gaming - Will FPS's ever go niche?

I think a genre ahead of its time(possibly music/rhythm games) might become the big genre by the ninth generation.  Also FPS's will not be as big as they are now.  Kinda like how JRPG's aren't as big as they were in the fifth gen or platformers in the third gen.  Thoughts?

Uh, why? You think they'll go niche but surely you have a reason?

Shooting stuff will always be fun and mainstream, there's no reason to think it'll suddenly lose it's appeal.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

they won't, they'll just evolve, i don't like most shooters, but you english speaking people sure love them and buy them in enormous proportions and seing the hype of games as killzone 2 and RE5(why kill survival horror?) shooters won't die just yet

:o pretty display pic. back on topic- Eventually every genre will make their mark and leave. Gaming companies will see that FPS are the hottest things to make right now. The market will be saturated by low rate shooters and then people will look for quality gaming experiences elsewhere.

It happened to Mortal Kombats/street fighters, racing games, RPGs, sand boxes, etc. It's the circle of life...video game style :p

I hope so, I am sick of all these FPS games and if it becamse niche then that means those devolopers would put their resources into another genre and hopefully one that i like.

I think you couldn't be farther from the truth..music games will stay as they are, if anything they're in their hayday now..they're only going to decrease, IMO. FPS will never lose popularity..they just won't. They may fall off slightly, but they'll always be a force in the gaming industry and a major genre forever basically.

None of those genres are 'niche' though, aside perhaps from RPG's. They're just not the most popular genre at the moment. There are still so many fighting games, racing games etc. that sell a hell of alot and are certainly mainstream.

The real niches today are flight sims, space sims, MMO's that are not WoW... etc.

I guess I'm wrong about the music games but... what about the "casual" genre?

Wii Sports killers, anyone?

i pray to go it does so w can get a new breed of games and gamers and lose some of the "ugggghhhh i shot car...car goes boom...boom??/...BOOOOM HEADSHOT....need master chief dew....mmmm..... BOOBIES"

I didn't want this to be an attack on the genre, I'm just saying that I doubt it will be as popular as it is now. It happened to platformers in the third gen, Beat-em ups and Shoot-em ups in the fourth, and JRPG's in the fifth. Basically, it's all downhill from here.
