Ok that I can agree with. That is where the article fails though, because he says they should be in the 360 and the Wii, and we all know these features will continue to be too expensive until at least the beginning of the next cycle of consoles. This is why you can't seperate the features from the price, because if the 360 and Wii had done what the article suggested, and had those features in their consoles, Microsoft and Nintendo would be as broke as Sony is now. The features were mistakes BECAUSE they came too early, not because they aren't awesome.

I agree with your last sentence as regards expense, although there are two mitigating factors Sony couldn't foresee.  First, the yen is 25% stronger vs the dollar than it has been within the last ..I dunno, decade almost.  25% multiplied the PS3's cost comes out to more than $100.  Conclusion: take away the economic factor of the yen and the components are not "too expensive" anymore, b/c PS3 would cost over $100 less and Sony could drop to $299.  Second, the recession is shifting demand to consoles priced less in absolute terms.  So those must be considered along with Sony's missteps.

The charitable interpretation of the article would be that some new version of 360 should have blu-ray, or that Live/VC should be as open as the PSN, starting now or in the future.  I mean, if the article is saying that Wii should have launched with blu-ray, that's obviously laughable, but I do think that going forward, some of the features would make sense for one or both of Sony's competitors.

But dropping to 299 isn't enough.  I think the Wii is too expensive for a mass market, but Wii Sports is making the price seem reasonable for most consumers. $199 is a good price for a console, or $250 with a AAA bundled game.

Dropping to 299 isn't enough for what?  It would vastly spur sales which would vastly spur game and blu-ray sales -- which would vastly spur positive income.  This is so even if MS/Nintendo also drop.  Further,  barring the yen Sony could have dropped to 299 6 months ago, not just now.  See how the effect would have been huge?  The effect prevented solely by the yen?

Sales of the Wii contradict your opinions on console prices.  Certainly, price drops can increase sales.  Of Wii, and PS3.

He's not a fanboy I hope everyone realizes that "This is the first of a three part series where we discuss the advantages of each of the three video game console makers.  Obviously, this first article is about Sony" So he'll be making two more articles about the advantages of the Xbox 360 and Wii.

Well that's easy. Make it more accesible to the average person. Cheaper. That way next gen they won't get their keesters handed to them.

1. Easier interface.(Wii)

2. Don't be in love with playing with the tech in bed. While that piece of hardware may be good loving it's not your wife it's a high priced.(Wii)

3. Effecient menus. With selectable themes. oh how I hate white.(Wii >:|)

4. Dedication to the software not the hardware. IE get what you need with good components and let software hande it.(360)

5. If you want to go Trojan stop being a stupid ass and be the new VHS. Be intween the other components and the TV. Then your interface will be on the TV ALL THE TIME. Be the channel changer, volume controll....

6. Your going online, so fully integrate the online system. Mac and Vista do so much better job. If you going to be a PC Online don't half ass it. (PC)
